Cottonwood Heights Police Department

About

" Solve the Problem. "

Description

The Cottonwood Heights Police Department is the newest law enforcement organization in the Salt Lake Valley. Nestled at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains between Big Cottonwood and Little Cottonwood Canyons, Cottonwood Heights covers about nine square miles with a population of approximately 35,000 people. The city is the gateway to major ski resorts and recreational canyons, as well as offering an easy access to the valley's transportation system.

When the City of Cottonwood Heights incorporated in 2005, a contract was entered into with the Salt Lake County sheriff to continue as the main provider of police protection. This changed in 2007 when Cottonwood Heights Mayor Kelvyn Cullimore and the city council opted to form their own locally-controlled police department and terminated the contract with the county sheriff. This service ended on September 1, 2008 and the Cottonwood Heights Police Department was born.

The CHPD has entered into partnerships with other municipalities to achieve an economy of scale and to provide an appropriate response to any potential emergency. This is accomplished by integrating members from CHPD into the Sandy Police Department SWAT Team. We believe that partnerships and mutual aid agreements provide local control and still accomplish the goal of providing quality pooled services to keep the citizens safe, as illustrated by SWAT, CSI Crime Lab Services and the major accident team reconstruction task force.

Today, Cottonwood Heights has some of the valley’s lowest crime rates, while the CHPD has great response times and some of the highest clearance rates of crimes. The cost for the service is equivalent to what the city would have paid the county for contracted services. As the city continues to grow, the CHPD will rise to meet the needs of its residents.

In September of 2015, the CHPD entered into an interlocal agreement with neighboring cities that allows Cottonwood Heights police personnel to render aid for those jurisdictions in case of emergencies. The agreement also allows for aid from those jurisdictions in case of a major event occurring in Cottonwood Heights. You can read the agreement here.

Also in September of 2015, the CHPD was the first Utah municipality to enter into an interlocal agreement with other Salt Lake County police agencies to form a task force meant to investigate Officer Involved Critical Incidents (OICI), such as officer-involved shootings, in custody deaths and other investigations involving police officers. You can read that agreement here. You can read the OICI Protocol here.

Officer, Polly Harris is a great school resource officer. Her class is super informative and she reminds us that law enforcement officers are human. All of the officers at CHPD lookout for the high schoolers, good and bad.
My sister was late taking her four kids 6 and under to swim lessons. She gets pulled over because her car wasn’t registered no postcard, LOL and because she was short with the officer he made her take all four kids out of the car, including a baby and a toddler, and car seats, on a busy road, and impounded the car and left her there before a ride came. Worst officer ever. Will be issuing a formal complaint. Her six year old as the officer is driving away: “I don’t like cops”. That is how you create a negative view of yourself in the community. Not serving the people but going on a power trip because you don’t like someone’s tone.
Special thanks to Officer’s Saldarriaga & Hughson today. Had a rattlesnake in the yard that went up our pergola about 9 feet. Officer Saldarriaga went up the latter and grabbed that bad boy. Also, just last Friday we had some downed lines from an accident in front of our home and we met officer Nick Garcia. We found him to be personable & likable. Over the years, we’ve had great interaction Chief Russo and every officer we’ve run into at CHPD. We also appreciate this department for helping with the ski traffic on Prospector Drive…it’s really made a difference. It’s not easy being a cop this day and age, but know there are many of us that have your 6. Matt and Tracie
Sylvia jessen got me a room at super 8 motel in south jordan. Thank you for you're service. Grateful that she got me a room for 6 days that ends this coming Wednesday night.
I'm an African American that's fairly new to Utah. Family wants me to move because of the lack of diversity. They continually send me articles of Utah police and their worst moments. I was recently pulled over buy Cottonwood Heights Police Department I was surprisingly shown so much respect and courtesy that I felt I had to post about it. I had a lot of anxiety and fear when I was pulled over probably giving off very fishing vibes. The officer responded in a calm manner not taking what I was giving off as a threat calm me down mm figured help figure out the situation.
I had my car break down earlier today and one of the Cottonwood Officers stop behind me. He was EXTREMELY nice and very helpful in that he gave me a ride back to work and made sure that my car was going to be alright until I could get it towed. Unfortunately I did not get his name but We graduated from the same high school! So thank you officer, for saving a girl a lot of stress!
Today Cottonwood Heights Officer Comber came to wish my son a Happy Second Birthday. It was one of the most heart warming things of our lifes. What an amazing representation of the compassion and caring that exist. I will forever have love for Cottonwood Heights PD.
Tonight, 2/5/19, technically 2/6/19 when it happened: Writing as of: 1:54am Today we had the incredible snow storm starting midday that lasted throughout the day/night. My boyfriend and I driving separately left the coffee shop we frequent in SLC at midnight to go back to his house in Sandy. While on the roads, all the way from before 2100s to Sandy they were heavy of unplowed snow. Roughly 4 inches. In order to ensure driving safely, my BF followed me about 2 to 3 car lengths behind, as he could see my car, a Honda Civic 4cyl, kept being pulled to the right because of the snow. We avg 25-30 miles an hour or so all the way back to the house because of conditions. That's when things turned bad, and road conditions were made worse thanks to Officer Michael Alvicar. Once I began climbing the hill right past Ft. Union, my speedometer was saying 35mph while my actual speed was closer to 5mph and I kept redlining. I slowed my engine and crawled up the hill just in time before slipping back. I shifted my car into 1st gear going down the unplowed Highland Dr. hill with my BF still following at a distance in his 4cyl. I go though the intersection on Creek Rd and Highland Dr, and begin the trek up the last hill I have to pass. My car then started to lose momentum slipping everywhere, pulling again to the right then left, so I'm in the middle lane at this point. My car is not climbing well due to NO traction. In every gear I try, it's close to redlining if I try too hard. My speedometer is now saying 40mph and I'm going no more than 5mph. As I'm halfway up the hill, a big truck from what I could tell from lights started gaining on me. In my rearview, I can also see my boyfriend getting closer and now my car is starting to slip back so I try and get it going which works. What turned out to be a truck, decides not to pass me, instead gains momentum behind me. I roll down my window wave my arm to tell the truck to go around as I put my hazards on and within seconds my boyfriend passes me on the right. The truck then gains speed and passes me way too close on my left, only for me to see it's a Cottonwood PD truck. I finally made it up the hill, thinking, maybe the cop wanted to ensure I didn't slip back since the roads are so dangerous. NOPE. As I get to the intersection, the cop got in front of me and then as my boyfriend has slowed down because he was turning, hence: blinkers, the cop heads straight for the light pole on the sidewalk, slams on his breaks, backs up, and pulls my boyfriend over, dividing our cars. As he gets out, I turn my radio and car off to listen. He's immediately hostile towards my boyfriend, I'm worried the cop is going to do something rash, so I start recording. Well, he explained to my boyfriend that he initially was running my plates & going to give me a ticket for using hazards in the middle lane but nevermind the fact that he was tailgating me which is why I put them on and had no choice to switch lanes when I did, but because he flipped the cop off for tailgating-before my BF even knew he was a cop, so the cop was getting his license, and info for a ticket. I went and parked in the cul de sac nearby and walked back to listen. The Cottonwood Cop was trying to find anything he could to give a citation when the incident happened technically in Sandy. I listened to the cop finally get out of his car. He gave my BF the following citation 1 failure to register registration expired over the weekend and because of work it's taken a bit of time 2 stopping or sudden decrease in speed the BF commented on road conditions and the officer said that he can give that violation because he's enforcing the law, nevermind the HORRENDOUS road conditions & 3 No proof of insurance warning, because his ins. card was renewed on the 28/29 as well and is in the mail. This is NOT how cops should behave w/horrendous road conditions. Trying to find a target to cite is NOT enforcing the law. I thought that officers were suppose to be there to ensure safety, not endanger civilians because they have a quota to fill.
I witnessed officer Potter interacting with a young girl in a walking chair. He was joking with her and giving he high five! Watching him truly made my day brighter. I know we love him at Saturday football games and all the kids at Butler middle love him. Cheers to officer Potter and the cottonwood heights police department.
Thank you officers for keeping my child and I safe... Oh wait, but you didn't. Instead of calling you to come and "talk" the downstairs tenant from kicking my door in, again, and physically assaulting me, again. Me, a single mother, alone, with a 6 month old, babysitting a 3 year old, with no transportation... I just had to have my friend come pick me, my baby, and my god son up from my house because the tenant downstairs is threatening to kill me while bashing my door in. Two days in a row. This being after you charged her with a DV assault just yesterday morning. You could have left a single mother to get physically assaulted with no one else to care for these two children. Way to do police work, guys.
