My spouse was in crisis struggling with addiction and went to Cottonwood Springs for help. I jumped online to learn more about the place and was dismayed by the bad reviews and complaints. To my delight, they had a wonderful experience with both the inpatient and outpatient treatment programs. Dr. Willey was knowledgeable and genuinely cares about helping people. The counselors and nurses took very good care of them and they made many friends while admitted. We are deeply indebted and grateful to Cottonwood Springs and the staff for being there, and for the wonderful care they provided. I'm not dismissing the experiences of bad reviewers, but please don't let them influence your decision to give Cottonwood Springs a try. My spouse is still early in their journey, but firmly believes this place and the people within saved their life and restored their hope for the future.
Being the first time I’ve done any type of treatment, I didn’t know what to expect. The nurses were nice, the therapists were nice, however they only focus on one or the other, mental health or substance abuse, but not both. It was always “let’s try you on this pill” but when stated I had bad interaction with certain meds and didn’t want to take anything, the Dr would only prescribe something else. The billing is an absolute nightmare and that’s why I give it 1 star. I’ve paid $2500 of my bill and continue to get new statements, a month and a half after I left the program. When I call, they say I’ve only paid $1100. I get one statement in the mail that says one thing and the online statement says another. I have now received a “past due” statement in the mail still not updated with the amount I’ve paid, even though I have email confirmation of two payments made. The third party company I contacted told me he would email and mail a “breakdown” bill of what I’ve paid, what I owe and what each bill is for and I have not received it. If given another past due statement without showing the funds I’ve already paid, legal matters will take place on my end. Do not waste your money on this place, as that is all that they seem to care about.
I’m sad to have to write this. From 2016 to 2019 I was a patient at Cottonwood multiple times, each a great experience. Their inpatient facilities were comfortable, their staff caring, their therapists and doctors really listened to you. I proudly recommended to everyone who asked, “Cottonwood is the best in Kansas City.” My how things change. My stay in 2023 was nothing short of nightmarish. On the first day, I was awoken and had my vitals taken. BPM 122. The staff did nothing. I saw the doctor, and while sitting there visibly sweating in a cold room and shaking, was told this was just marijuana withdrawals and would need to “tough it out.” I had to literally threaten self harm before anyone took me seriously. I got an Ativan mid-afternoon and survived the day. On the second day, my doctor told me that Ativan was a controlled substance, and I shouldn’t ask for it again. My BPM upon being woken up and before bed was over 110, but it didn’t matter. I was a dirty pot addict, and this was the wages of my sin. On the third day I went to group. As noted above, I’ve been in this system a few times. I like to offer some of the knowledge I’ve gained to other patients. So when the therapist reacted to my input with “thanks but I think I had already clearly covered that” I was more than a bit shocked. So my doctor is treating me like a hard drug addict, and the group therapist is being sarcastic with me. Good start, and I say start because… Day four I finally met my therapist. I asked why I hadn’t seen her the first three days I was there, and apparently it was my fault. I was asleep, you see. Cottonwood staff will wake you up to take your vitals I imagine this is a legal requirement but is quite happy to let you sleep when it comes to actual treatment. Feels almost spiteful to say, but I’m reasonably sure this is because insurance keeps paying even if they are just housing you. So, treatment plan finally in hand, we venture into day five. Day five I discovered that apathy runs in the nursing staff as well. If you stand at the nursing counter and the nurses are doing something else, you may as well just walk away. I watched/listened to 3 nurses talk about their evening for 8 minutes I watched the clock. When one of them went on break, one of the other 2 decided that asking a patient what they needed was worth their time. I asked for discharge information/scheduling, but of course, I had none. My complaints were met with a long legal form talking about leaving against medical advice. I should have done so, but was under the impression insurance does not cover AMA. This is not the case, if anyone else gets trapped here or somewhere similar. Day six was all about trying to get free. My doctor asked why I wanted to leave, and I explained the young man who was watching my home and pets had screwed up. She informed me that leaving a 16 year old to watch my house was “stupid” and that I should have gotten an adult. I was disappointed that she didn’t tell me what the correct decision was, because with all my adult friends having responsibilities of their own, I just didn’t have any other choice. Day seven finally rolls around, and I’m told my discharge is “anytime after noon.” At noon, I discovered the paperwork wasn’t actually done. So my friends who had come to pick me up? They got to drive a half hour home, and I got to take an Uber home 2 hours later. Nightmare. I’m loathe to share such a traumatic experience, but folk need to know. Go elsewhere. Cottonwood has changed, and is now quite far from the best in the city.
Two stars for my mother having food and shelter here while she was in crisis and homeless. One star taken away because I am currently still waiting for a doctor to call me about what they even did for my mother while she was there. One star taken away for all nurses yelling at me on the phone saying they are too busy to answer my questions. And the last star taken away for the staff discharging/dumping my mother off at a hotel that wasn’t even open for business so I had to pick her up off the streets. Again.
This facility has kidnapped my wife by using plausible deniability not informing her that she can leave, and not allowing anyone to speak to her to not be held accountable for their actions. She has been starved and harassed by the nursing staff who continually "miscommunicated" their actions to their superiors. I was told today that nobody is actually in charge of this facility as well. This is a kidnapping at this point
This place was fantastic the first time I went, and about halfway through my second visit, it was so bad it dropped to 1 star. The Dr in charge of the rehab side is marvelous.. he helped me so much and did care a lot. Now the male nursesometimes wears dreads he is probably the worst medical pro I have ever witnessed. I use the VA, so I've seen some bad ones. PATRICK is the reason they don't get my easy 30 day VA insured stay anymore...was easy money for them. Do not see Patrick when you are there, he will completely change from visit to visit, like he doesn't even know you, and if you say anything he disagrees with he will actually argue with you and make you very uncomfortable. Request a different nurse for you medicine meeting, he is not the one you want to be stuck with on the weekends...u had to leave AMA, and I've never done that before and hope I never will again. They never reached out to me either after I left AMA to found out of there were any issues, cottonwood doesn't care.
They're impersonal. They don't care. And their approach to rehab is is underwhelming. They prey on people's mental health and substance abuse disorders. They're another cash grab rehab. They will also spam bill you and send debt collectors after you. STAY AWAY!
Omg. I am a pharmD. Stay way from this place. It is gross. Overrun with ants. The nurses are mean. This place will make you scared of drinking ever. Those positive reviews are fake. This is jailhouse rock to the core. The food is disgusting. Just yuck. I couldn't wait to be discharged so my insurance would pay. I would have went ama after the first few days but i was concerned my insurance wouldn't pay if i didn't stay. Just eww.
Very unprofessionalOnly saw the doctor for 2 minutes the first dayDr. Wily was in way too much of a hurry . Day 5 the the therapist finally made contact with me. I liked him though he would at least listen to me. As soon as I mentioned leaving to dr. Wily , he immediately cut off all my medication and told me to leave. No discussion, no options , nothing. I was just looking for a little care from him and he showed NONE. IF I VOULD RATE THIS PLACE ZERO STAR'S I WE OULD.
I did part of the outpatient programs and thought it was a very smooth process throughout. Lots of help with any task and making sure everyone was healthy and establishing healthy habits and critical thought processes affecting individual health. I would recommend. Edit: I’m reading the top negative reviews for here and it appears to be people who haven’t been through the program themselves but were adjacent to individuals in the programs. Not denying their experiences by any means but I have been through and I had a very good experience.
