I discovered the superior nutrition of hemp several years ago while attending a hemp bazaar in search of varieties of 100% hemp fabrics. I was interested in creating a sun smart clothing line – hemp fibers are successful blocking harmful and skin damaging rays.
Bless my mother, from a young age; it had been drilled into me to read food labels for ingredients and nutrition information. When I stumbled upon a package of hemp flour, I was stunned reading the nutritional value! I had never seen such an impressive resume! My immediate thought was, “Wow! Is this for real?”
Some weeks later while grocery shopping with my little granddaughter who wanted to buy yogurt, I was trouble at the ingredients in the yogurt she was picking out. Packaging targeted toward kids, making claim of “natural” and “good”. At that point, wanting to pass along my tradition of label reading, I handed that sweet child the container and asked her to read me the ingredients. With a little help sounding out a few words, these big beautiful blue eyes looked up at me and asked, “What is that mammie?”
“Exactly Parker! Is that something you want to eat?”
I realized at that moment looking around; the grocery store had gotten far worse than when my children were young. Wolves in sheep clothes perched on every shelf targeting kids. Marketing on packages, luring mis-educated parents into buying products with misleading claims of beneficial nutrition. That’s when it hit me me, I needed to bring hemp food into people’s lives. The sun protective clothing would go on hold – thus the birth of our family project to launch hemp based food products!
HEMP! We have heard the snickers; we have seen the questionable looks; but we say NAY! Poor nutrition and the epidemic of the diseases from lack of good nutrition is no laughing matter. My passion to help provide healthy food choices is fueled when I see folks, especially children who are fighting obesity. Diabetes, high blood pressure, and other malnourished induced diseases are illnesses that many folks could conquer by eating better. They simply don’t know and proper guidance is needed.
