Creative Writing at Washington State University is for students interested in writing poetry, fiction, nonfiction and working in the writing industry.
Creative Writing at Washington State University is for students interested in creative writing in various forms (poetry, fiction, nonfiction prose), in editing and publishing, and in careers drawing on related creative and professional skills. The overall program involves three areas: First, the classroom course of study; Second, the campus literary magazine LANDESCAPES, which is entirely run by undergraduate students; and Third, the Visiting Writers' Series, which students help manage.
The curriculum involves a three-tiered program of writing workshops, culminating in two senior workshop seminars where students work on a final project in the creative writing genre of their choice. Creative writing majors also take a series of literature courses alongside the writing workshops. The full curriculum can be found on the Department of English web site at: http://libarts.wsu.edu/english/Option%20Requirements.html
Students have the option of writing for LANDESCAPES and/or working on the editorial, marketing, and business teams that put out the magazine once a year.
Students also work on the logistics and marketing of the Visiting Writers' Series, which has brought to campus such writers as Robert Olen Butler, Judy Blunt, Hoa Nguyen, Kim Barnes, Rick Barot, Benjamin Percy, Katrina Roberts, Ed Dorn, Anne Waldman, Robert Wrigley, Galway Kinnell, and many others.
To train students in the art of writing poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. To expose students to all facets of the writing industry, including writing, editing, and marketing of published works.
