The Crisis Center for South Suburbia is dedicated to helping victims of domestic violence receive safety, strength and hope.
The Crisis Center for South Suburbia is a non-profit community organization that provides emergency shelter and other essential services for individuals and families victmized by domestic violence.
24-HOUR HOTLINE
708-429-SAFE
The confidential hotline provides crisis intervention and referral services 24 hours, every day of the year. Callers speak to a staff of trained volunteers and professionals. The primary purpose of the hotline is to respond to calls from individuals who are victims or are threatened with domestic or dating violence.
EMERGENCY SHELTER
Individuals and families who are experiencing domestic violence receive emergency short-term shelter in a bright and updated facility that accomodates individuals with physical limitations. Up to 35 women and children can be housed for up to 60 days.
COUNSELING
The counseling Program provides both individual and group counseling services, free of charge, to adults and children victimized by domestic violence. Clients need not be a resident of the shelter to access counseling services.
Counselors are trained to address issus of domestic violence and guide victims through a personal service plan, which allows each client to set her own goals.
Counseling services are also available for children and adolescents who have witnessed or experienced domestic and/or dating violence.
ALL COUNSELING SERVICES ARE NON-JUDGEMENTAL AND CONFIDENTIAL. Call the 24-Hour Hotline at 708-429-SAFE (7233).
COURT ADVOCACY
Legal advocacy services to victims of domestic violence or dating violence are offered in the the Markham and Bridgeview courthouses. Court advocates also provide legal advocacy groups for residential clients of the Criss Center.
The Court Advocacy Program offers emotional support and assistance with understanding the court process, and provides crisis intervention, community education, and follow-up contact with victims.
LEAV (Law Enforcement And Victim) OUTREACH PROGRAM
Collaborative partnerships with law enforcement agencies help deliver services to victims of domestic violence. Positive working relationships between advocates and law enforcement help to create a network of support for victims.
DATING VIOLENCE PREVENTION
One in three teens has experienced violence in a dating relationship, and 60 percent of battered women say their first abusive relationship began in high school.
Dating violence is controlling, abusive, and aggressive behavior in a romantic relationship. It can include verbal, emotional, physical or sexual abuse, or a combination of these.
The Crisis Center for South Suburbia educates young people about dating violence and encourages healthy relationships.
FAMILY CASE MANAGEMENT
Crisis Center clients receive a comprehensive array of services. Women work toward independence and benefit from education on domestic violence issues, as well as parenting, life skills and job readiness training. Children who have witnessed violence in their young lives receive age-specific counseling and educational assistance.
Live Safe Patient Advocacy
Medical professionals are often the first contact for victims of domestic violence. In many cases, someone from the medical field represents a safe and familiar option for a victim who wishes to reveal instances of abuse.
The Crisis Center and Little Company of Mary Hospital work in partnership to provide services to patients identified as victims of domestic violence. Advocates also provide training to the medical staff on issues of domestic violence.
PARTNER ABUSE INTERVENTION
This program is designed to assist the batterers in ending abusive behavior in their intimate relationships. Individuals participate in a 26-week education and therapy group at a satellite location.
TRANSITIONAL HOUSING
The Transitional Housing Program bridges the gap between emergency shelter and permanent housing by providing a safe apartment to victims of domestic violence for up to 24 months.
Families who are in the Transitional Housing Program continue to benefit from the counseling and life-skills training programs provided, at no charge, through the Crisis Center. They also receive assistance in securing independent, permanent housing.
COMMUNITY EDUCATION
Presentations which focus on the complex issues of domestic violence are offered at no charge to community and corporate groups.
Presentations are designed to fit the needs of the organization, from profession-specific training to general domestic violence information.
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE TRAINING
Forty-hour domestic violence training is available through the Crisis Center for South Suburbia. This training is mandatory for those who volunteer in areas that require direct client service. A certificate of achievement is granted upon completion of the course.
VOLUNTEERS
Volunteers are a priceless resource at the Crisis Center. They are the voices of hope on the hotline and the hands of service at our shelter. The work they do is as varied as their interests. However, whether they are creating a unique shopping experience at Neat Repeats, updating our computer system, transporting donations, providing childcare, planting a garden or making repairs a the shelter, the contribution of their time and talent is price-less, as it allows the Crisis Center to direct funds to much needed services and programs.
