Very friendly staff all around; at the front desk, tour, and mining! Walked in without tickets and only had to wait about 20 minutes for the next tour. With a great gift shop, the wait was not a problem at all. They have warm popcorn and drinks to purchase while you wait or a snack after your spelunking. They also have different options for mining for stones, gems, and even fossils! My kids 10, 11, and 15, myself and my husband all had a blast! I recommend the longer tour if you want to get a full experience and a shorter tour if you have anyone with any mobility limitations or small children! You might want a sweater on the way down but won't need it on the way up with all the stairs to climb. Definitely recommend coming here for a memorable experience!
This was a cave. If you’ve never seen a cave and want to see one, then this is a cave to see. I haven’t been to the other caves in the area so I don’t know if they’re any better or worse than this one. I have been to several other cave systems in other States and that’s what I’m comparing this one to. For example, the Meramec caverns are phenomenal. They are a solid standard I compare other caverns to. That being said, comparatively, these were lacking. Before I continue I do have to say that the staff were amazing and our guide, Ethan, was excellent, friendly, and well informed. While you wait for the tour there’s a cool area out front you can pan for gems and stones in a man made micro river. It was pretty fun and the stones we found were very small but awfully pretty. Now… the caves themselves. There are two options. There’s an Adventure tour you can take to explore most of the cavern. We took the shorter Crystal tour which only covers about 30%. The difference is a whole bunch of steps and about an hour longer journey. The length of time wasn’t the issue. The caverns were lighted but it didn’t seem like they were done so to enhance the natural beauty. It was more utilitarian. However, there really wasn’t much beauty. If you take a gander at my pics, you’ll see they’re all kind of monotonous. There was nothing really spectacular to see. What was interesting was a little bit of the history. Moonshiners used the caverns to make moonshine of course and apparently one batch was so strong it made some local residents go blind, which I find hilarious. The paths were concrete and a few areas had added grip where it could be slippery. I’m 6 foot tall and was hunching over for the most part. It wasn’t so bad but it’s something to think about. All in all I won’t be going back. I’ll be checking out some of the other cave systems in the area and hoping for the best. I’d think if you’d seen all the other caves in the area and want to unlock 100% achievement or something then head on over.
My first of many trips to the caverns was an absolute blast! It is the perfect activity for those hot days, since the caves are nice and cool. We did the longer tour that was about 1 and a half hours. Lots of stairs but an amazing walk. This is a great place for family fun as little ones can get hard hats with lights at the gift shop before going on the tour. Our guide, mazie was funny and great!
Sophie I mean Eric is probably the best guide you'll find. He made every part of the tour extremely fun and rememberable. If I could only go to one cave while being out in the black hills I'd definitely pick here and ask for Eric by name.
We thought the caves were beautiful. We enjoyed that they were cool on a hot day. I just recently had surgery for lung cancer and was worried I couldn't do the hike down and up but I made it with inhaler help. If it's something you want to do, try it! Our guide, Ethan, was newer but did a great job and checked frequently if I was ok and ready to move on not knowing I'm recovering. Thank you for the experience!
This was fun! We picked this to do at the last minute, so we didn’t have reservations. The guide waited to see if more people showed up, so we didn’t get in right away. Overall, the tour was great! Watch your head, walk carefully, and bring something warm - it’s cool in the cave.Visited onWeekdayWait time10–30 minReservation recommendedNot surePrice for adult entry$16–20
This one was hard to rate due to the 12 year old guide we ended up with, so I'll give it a four for the fact that the rest of the staff was awesome! They came through for us and made it right. The cave itself is pretty cool. I only did the first level due to mobility issues, but the rest of my family did the entire thing and it goes down many levels. I highly suggest if you are a really big person you might want to pass this by. Very tight spaces and of course you are not supposed to touch any of the rocks if possible. Anyone 6 feet tall or above, you will be stooping over most of the time so you won't hit you head. I'm only 5'7" and still had to walk bent over a lot. Wear a warm shirt or jacket, it is cooler under ground.
Great site, the visitor center is well kept and has a great selection of gifts. Our tour guide, Tanner, was fabulous. He interacted wonderfully with the group, and had fabulous answers for my 6yo questions about the cave and the dragon he was certain lived there. The cave is an easy tour, a bit of a light workout at the end ascending back out, but really beautiful and well worth the hour walk! Definitely on our go back list. There is a tour discount on buckets and bags of rock for panning your own treasures. Highly recommend.
This place was great! We went on a whim on the way to Deadwood and it was the best part of the day. Friendly staff, super reasonable pricing, 1-hour strenuous tour or 1/2 hour first level tours. Absolutely would be worth a bit of a drive out of the way, but a must visit if you're traveling between Rapid City and DeadwoodVisited onWeekendWait time10–30 minReservation recommendedYesPrice for adult entry$16–20
First of all, our tour guide was funny and very talkative as a guide should be. This tour was one of the better cave tours I have been on and I have visited many across the country. There were great formations and an awesome story behind it. I would not recommend it for anyone that has trouble with stairs. There aren't many of them but they are small and very steep inside the cave. If you are in the area, take a couple hours and visit. You won't be disappointed.
