The Cushing Memorial Chapel is a unique historic setting that provides the perfect site for weddings, bar mitzvahs, baptisms and other special events. The
Cushing Memorial Chapel's offers a bit of living history as the site's significance dates back to 1943 when it was built as part of Cushing General Hospital, a 95-building complex built to treat wounded World War II soldiers. Many Framingham and area residents affectionately recall this special part of Framingham's history as countless volunteers from the town donated hours of assistance to our soldiers. Soldiers were transported from the New England seaports via special trains directly into the Cushing Campus to receive the much needed medical care as the United States' involvement in the war increased. This famous hospital was named in honor of Dr. Harvey Cushing, a brilliant neurosurgeon and brain surgery pioneer. At its peak, Cushing Hospital housed 1,750 beds and treated thousands of World War II and Korean War soldiers. During wartime, many Chapel services were held and visitors to the hospital included celebrities such as Bing Crosby and high ranking military officials such as General Douglas MacArthur.
The campus eventually became a veterans' hospital and finally closed its doors in 1985. The Cushing Memorial Chapel is the only building remaining from the original Cushing General Hospital campus. Thanks to the tremendous efforts of a coalition of veterans, community volunteers, historic preservationists and town employees and friends, the Cushing Chapel was saved and magnificently restored for the use of future generations. We are forever indebted to this group for this historic treasure that they preserved.
Many special services are held in the Chapel on Veterans Day and at other holidays throughout the year to honor those who serve and have served our country. The adjacent Cushing Memorial Park features veteran memorials and a beautiful gazebo dedicated as a 9/11 Memorial.
