In October 2010, Mayor Hickenlooper formed Denver's Sustainable Food Policy Council as an advisory entity to the City on matter of food policy and programs and to help raise awareness in the community about the issues and challenges with our food system. The proposed policy changes that were produced are: 1) remove regulatory barriers on the sale of raw agricultual commodities on residential properties; 2) develop a local purchasing ordinance; 3) increase SNAP redemption opportunities; and 4) encourage a broad range of fresh food outlets from traditional models to alternatives.
The Denver SFPC influences policy that fosters food security for all community members and promotes a healthy, equitable, and sustainable local food system, with consideration for economic viability and environmental impact.
