It’s always a great day to be a Derby Bulldog!
Every student, every day, preparing for the future.
Originally Derby Elementary housed grades K-8. The mascot at that time was the tiger. During the 1959-1960 school year grades seven through nine moved into and occupied the former high school building at 715. E. Madison. At that time, the former tiger mascot was discarded and a new one along with new school colors where chosen.
“The Bulldog, in the early 1800's, was bred in England and was known for being ferocious. It had a massive head, with low, short body, and wide-apart forelegs. It was later bred with the same distinctive characteristics, but without the ferocity.
Today the Bulldog is used as a symbol of marked quality. It is recognized for its great skills and mastery and for its affectionate nature despite its menacing aspect. The Bulldog is a sign of courage and leadership.
Our school is much like the Bulldog, strong and skillful, with outstanding characteristics for leadership and sportsmanship. That is why we chose the Bulldog for our mascot. “

Overtime the particular image of the Bulldog has changed. It has been seen with teeth bared, smiling, sitting, running, walking, wearing a derby, and straining at the leash. One fact that remains the same is the 1959-1960 DJHS students wanted a unique and inspiring mascot which would stand the test of time. The pride in our Bulldog has not waned.
