After paying IRS big bucks, I decided it was time I found a legal way to lower my taxes. There must be some deductions I hadn't thought of. So I went to the H&R Block Tax prep school. I loved it and knew I had to help other people save money. So in 1979 I opened DIJAK ACCOUNTING.
I wanted to know more so at 36 I headed off to college. In the meantime I worked from my kitchen table with carbon paper, a pencil and a calculator preparing taxes. Four years later when I graduated from Northwood Institute with my BBA I seriously started to build the business.
I added business services and moved to an extra bedroom. When my kids went off to college I turned my large living room into a two room office. My daughter was my secretary and my business was growing.
A few years later I needed more room. So my son who was now an engineer built me an office with a separate handicap accessible entrance in half of my garage.
Both of my children were now married. My daughter was teaching at Delta and my son was working at Delphi running a test lab. One October my son called and asked if I would help him with his homework. He had graduated from college about 10 years ago and his children were in preschool, homework? When he arrived with his homework he informed me that I needed help in my business so he was taking the H&R Block tax course and would I teach him what he needed to know so he could be my helper.
With both of us and a full time secretary my two rooms were again too small. Our clients numbered over 700. It was either move the business and lose the family friendly atmosphere or add more space. We added a bright and cheery room and I've never been sorry.
There is a special quality in working from your home. I tell everyone I walk to work everyday. Working with family and having friends as clients and clients as friends is what life is all about.
Many clients are the third generation of their family to use our services. In a few years we hope to have the third generation of Dijak's serving our clients.
