To promote and bring about the peaceful settlement of disputes and to prevent the escalation of conflict through mediation, conciliation, facilitation, and training.
MEDIATION
- Mediation is a voluntary, informal, confidential process in which neutral mediators assist parties in a discussion of issues. In over 85% of cases, parties reach a mutually agreeable resolution of their dispute.
- Types of cases: co-workers, business associates, family, friends, neighbors, homeowner-contractor, landlord-tenant, district court-referred, roommates, special education.
PUBLIC DISPUTES
- The Public Disputes Program provides meeting facilitation, multi-party mediation, and training services so that groups and communities will be more effective at resolving conflict, discussing difficult topics, and developing collaborative problem solving skills.
-Groups served by the Program include neighborhood associations, government staff, elected boards, citizen coalitions, faculty, workplace teams, boards of directors, faith congregations, volunteer pools, advisory commissions, and task forces.
YOUTH PROGRAMS
1) Youth in Schools and Community
Young people and the adults who support them can learn creative ways to approach everyday conflicts. Through our interactive and age-appropriate trainings, we help youth recognize that they have choices when faced with conflict.
2) Restorative Justice for Youth
Restorative justice (as opposed to retributive) sees crime as a community breach and offers hope for healing. We work with young people, their families, and those affected by juvenile crime to facilitate dialogue and encourage accountability.
- Victim-offender mediators work with nonviolent juvenile offenders and those harmed to discuss the incident and ways to repair the breach. Cases are referred from Orange County Department of Juvenile Justice.
- Through our FAMILY TABLE series, we help parents and teenagers learn new ways to communicate and negotiate.
TRAININGS
- For nearly thirty years, the Dispute Settlement Center has trained individuals and groups in business, nonprofit organizations and government. Learning how to handle conflict better can enhance productivity and workplace harmony. We can custom-tailor communication, conflict management, and mediation trainings for your organization.
