Dittrick Museum Of Medical History in the Allen Memorial Medical Library is filled with a wide, strange and sometimes downright bizzare collection of medical equipment. There is a rather unique and thorough exhibit on birth control through the ages. In the stairwell leading to the museum there are four murals representing the mythological origins of medicine: Asklepios taught by [the centaur] Chiron, Machaon surgeon and son of Asklepios, Asklepios Beloved Physician, Asklepios Greek God of Medicine. Outside the museums operating entrance on Adelbert, the is an historic marker for the Horatio Cyrus & Martha Cozad Ford home, a refuge on the Underground Railroad where freedom seekers were assisted to the dock and passage to Canada, and freedom. The opposite side of the marker recounts David Hudson's contribution to the Underground Railway.and Western Reserve College originally in Hudson but relocated to Cleveland 1882. In 1854, Frederick Douglass gave the commencement address in Hudson.
Amazing collection of devices and pictures. It is inside a CWRU building and some exhibits are in glass cases along the hallway. I had to park in the Severance Hall parking garage and walk over, but it wasn’t that difficult. Not a large museum, but still a must see for anyone interested in the history of women’s health and contraception.
This place is a quiet gem in a busy world. Not as big as the Mutter, but it's sorta like the next best thing. The library on the floor below is full of antique medical equipment and books. Not bad for free and self guided.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
Contains over 175,000 artifacts and surgical instruments! The museum was established in 1898 by the Cleveland Medical Library Association.
I wasn’t expecting very much from this museum since admission is free. However I was surprised by how much information they packed into a small area. I learned a lot of interesting facts during my visit. There are lots of visuals however there’s also a lot to read so try to budget some extra time.
Very cool medical museum About 1-2hrs
Very informative.
Super cool and unique. Amazing collection of medical devices. Rare book collection is also great. Love it.
Really enjoyed strolling through. Nice displays, and rich immersive history of Case Western's early days. Learned a lot about Clevelands place in the founding days of Radiology, and the progression of the physician over the generations. Small but very dense with displays and tons of information.
It’s a amazing building with historic collections at the museum.
