Double JJ Resort

Description

Double JJ Resort is located in Rothbury, Michigan. It is a four-season resort which opened as the Jack and Jill Ranch in 1937. It has been the location of the Rothbury Music Festival two times, and has hosted the Electric Forest Festival annually since 2011. Double JJ has expanded to include a golf course, an indoor water park, and conference center to go along with the original ranch.HistoryIn 1914 George and Mary Stouch left their home in Central Germany and settled on 80acre of farmland in Western Michigan. The farm included a brick home built by the Kennedy family in 1894. The land also embraced a large, spring fed lake, Big Wildcat Lake.In 1930 daughter Roma was employed as an instructor at a private school for girls. She was the first to use the lake setting and surrounding woods at their father’s farm commercially. She presented a summer camping experience at Wildcat Lake to her students, hoping to get their parents approval. Roma would be the councilor and instruct 8 to 12 year olds in outdoor camping, crafts, swimming, drama, dancing, and sports, including horseback riding. Her project got parental approval, and her first year brought 23 girls to her camp. The camp was named “Cedar Shores” because of the hundreds of white cedar trees surrounding the lake. A stone wall at the corner of Water and Clay road stands today with an embedded bronze plaque marking the site of the first family business attempt. The deep depression of the early thirties cut short Roma’s efforts and the Cedar Shores experience faded into history. The beauty of the lake and ease of camping was well known in the community, and during the summer of 1933 the family invited local church congregations to send their children to the farm for a supervised, well counseled summer vacation. This was the Cedar Shores experience two years later, but with kids. To honor their young guests the family renamed the farm “The Jack and Jill Ranch.” Although the kids' ranch remained only two years (followed by a more grandiose camping experience) the name Jack and Jill Ranch was a success beyond imagination and the property was called by that name until the mid-1970s when the owners decided to change the name to the Double JJ Ranch Resort, and in 2009 to the Double JJ Resort.

We had a great time staying at the double j ranch. We used the water park, glow mini golf, bull riding, Arcade with or children and grand children. We had a blast. Ended the day with an hour ride at the equestrian stables. The staff there was amazing. It was my husband and I. They had a total of 14 people going on the trail ride and they took there time with us. It was an amazing time.
We went for a quick birthday overnight get away and my granddaughter and friends had a blast. We will definitely plan on coming back in the future. I was leary because of some of the reviews but everything was clean and comfortable. The water park was great. Could definitely see where it was once a more upscale resort with more to do but for what we were going for it was perfect. All the staff we encountered were friendly and very helpful. Maybe a few more food and souvenir options and some updates would go a long way. I hope it eventually gets built back up because this place has so much more potential to be awesome but they did a great job with what they had!!! Keep up the good work and will see you next time!!!! Rooms: Stayed in a cabin it was clean and comfortable. The kids loved the loft area. Could use a little more room in the living/dining area but for one night it was great!
We went to Double JJ for a Horseback riding experience. Our group had 2 adults, and two children ages 8 and 6. The ranch went above and beyond to give our kids a memorable and positive experience. Our 6 year old was assigned a "handler" for her horse- a true rodeo clown!!! He was interactive with her and I appreciated him being not only conscious of her safety- but he explained the "why" to her as we went along. The scenic ride through the forest is something we're still talking about days later!
*Indoor water park only* Okay, so here’s my experience with my family. Two adults. Two children 8&10. First, I should say they have 4 big water slides. 3 you ride with tubes and one by yourself. They’re all very fun, even for adults. We rode them many times. None of the pools are very deep and it’s great for tiny kids too. We had pizza from the restaurant upstairs and it was very good. We did notice it’s an older place and yeah, they could probably do some updating, but we went there for the kids to have a blast and they did. In total, we were there for 7 hours. Didn’t have issues with the staff, but they did mention they were short staffed so one slide was only open from 3-6 but that didn’t change my experience. I had a ton of fun with my family. For $25 a ticket, I wasn’t expecting an out of this world experience. Maybe that’s just me. Hopefully, this helps someone decide if it’s worth it.
I am so impressed that I can’t wait until we get home to review this place. I wouldn’t even think twice about the poor reviews, which I was so nervous about prior to. Establishments are having staffing issues everywhere I think consumers need to be a little more gracious, even if the staff isn’t doing their job at least the owners are doing their best to try to staff the place. We had an amazing time at the water park, no complaints at ALL! It is perfect in every way and SO MUCH FUN!! We will totally make this our destination every year. The cabin is quaint and adorable, very clean, extra sheets and blankets, perfect experience for our 7 year old and my husband and I who love being outdoors. The cabins are in groups about 10 each around a circle, with fire pits in the middle. We can’t wait to come back and enjoy a longer stay, in the summer when the outdoors are a bit more open including the town and outdoor water park. The fact they offer so many things to do here is amazing. You have to experience it yourself. If you like to drink, their bar is right upstairs from the indoor water park which we felt was a nice touch during our little get away.
Everything was amazing, we had such an awesome time here. The pools were very nice, lots of space and a lot of fun activities. The rooms were very clean as well! The only thing to watch out for is the parking garages. Your key fob will NOT work inside near the automatic garage doorsRooms: 5/5
This place has really gone downhill. We still had a good time but it’s nothing compared to what it was. Very little entertainment but if you want basic camping where kids can ride bikes, go swimming it’s good for that. I miss the old double jj with the candle making, animals in the barn and rodeo. Hope this place can be restored. It has a great deal of potential. I would like to add that all the staff was super kind and accommodating. I have hope that this place can be restored to its original beauty. Obviously Covid hit a lot of resorts hard and I think it just needs time and some love.
We recently had a big family retreat there and it was a fantastic experience. Brandy Williams made sure that we were treated so well from the moment I first contacted her for a site visit all the way through the planning and the event weekend itself. Accommodations were fantastic, the kids loved the waterparks, the Back Forty provided such a great environment for families to connect and hang out. It was an amazing experience and we will definitely be back!
The staff are nice people. But It doesn't matter how much fun the kids have when the beds are that u comfortable I would have found more padding under the carpet and half the stuff is out of order. We did it once. Never again.Rooms: 1/5
We received gift cards for Christmas. The first time I went to use them, i couldn’t because they would take them over the phone. The gentleman was rude. Second time. Was explained policies and helped. But then got to the resort and my reservation was messed up. And when I told them to move all costs to the gift cards they messed that up and refunded on part and charged the rest to my card. I do not recommend giving your family their gift cards as they are extremely hard to use and half the staff doesn’t even know how to accept them. Oh and don’t even try to contact a manager. They won’t let you speak to one on the phone. And no one will call you back. Rooms: We had stayed in tow adjoining rooms. The locks didn’t work in the bathrooms. The knobs were broken on the tubs. And the door between the rooms had hardware installed incorrectly which would have made it easy for anyone to come through had we not hat both rooms. Nearby activities: Arcade: lots of the arcade games are broken and in need of repair. Water park: water park was dirty. There were bandaids and hair and trash in multiple areas. Seen both on day one and day two which means staff didn’t walk the park when closed. I had little ones and they wanted to do the slides. We couldn’t because of height restrictions. Totally understandable. But don’t allow your assistant manager to take his family down the rides with his child of less than 1/2 the height of mine. Food & drinks: Half of their food shops were closed. There was only one option. Would love more transparency on this on their website. Noteworthy details: Overpriced. Could have stayed at a nearby hotel for a lot less and just purchased day passes.
