Douglas LaMont Fine Furniture - About my work
The furniture that takes form in my shop owes allegiance to a rich tradition of disciplined craftsmen who understood that their success in building beautiful furniture found its fullest expression through a respect for the requirements of function. My work is not designed for the gallery alone, but wants to be used and experienced. Many of my newest pieces explore this relationship between form and function, how each respects, informs and contributes to the other. Sometimes playful, often formal, and always paying homage to both creativity and tradition, these pieces are born to both delight and serve.
My inspiration derives from observations of form and shape, proportions and fine details, function and use and a lifelong respect for the warmth and beauty of wood. I delight in giving new expression to what has been well done by those who came before, aware of the broad shoulders on which I stand.
ABOUT ME
I am a native Montanan, a lover of this magnificent State, and an incurable artisan. I moved into adulthood with degrees and certifications in Biology, German and Elementary Education and proceeded to ignore all that effort by launching a career as a maker of fine furniture. After 35 years, I still get excited about going into the shop to work. This enthusiasm shows in the pieces I make, the attention to detail, the desire to do it well, the discipline to do it right and, I hope, an irresistible “personality”.
