Official Bio:
A first generation college student from Beloit, Wisconsin, Iona College’s eighth president, Joseph E. Nyre, Ph.D. earned his B.A. in psychology in 1991 from the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse. Prior to and while attending the University of Wisconsin, he served in the U.S. Navy Reserves. He went on to earn an M.A. from the University of Missouri, and an Ed.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. Dr. Nyre then completed post-doctoral fellowships at Harvard Medical School and the University of Kansas.
As a scientist practitioner, Dr. Nyre has practiced as a psychologist in academic, clinical and private practice settings while serving in a faculty capacity at many institutions including Baylor University, the University of Kansas and Harvard Medical School/Children’s Hospital. Through his leadership in higher education, public education and hospital systems, Dr. Nyre became highly regarded in system innovation and public policy reform. In addition to a nationally recognized program of research and to authoring state and federal legislation, Dr. Nyre founded: partial hospital programs, a private practice, the Noll Medical Pavilion, Noll Dental Clinic, the Children’s Healthcare Partnership, Central Illinois DD Dental Advisory Commission, The Autism Program of Illinois Service Network, and the Kansas Psychology Training Consortium in clinical, school, and counseling psychology.
As President of Iona College, Dr. Nyre deployed a college wide process to develop a 5-year strategic plan which has: advanced college enrollment and college affordability; enhanced the Catholic identify of the College; founded or augmented numerous faculty development, awards and innovation programs; launched numerous undergraduate and graduate programs, centers and institutes; redesigned and launched a new core curriculum, faculty workload policy, and accelerated program review policy and process; significantly expanded the main campus by 30 percent and built or renovated many academic and residential buildings; grew the College’s endowment by more than 140 percent; elevated institutional credit ratings, completed the College’s first 5-year financial plan, and substantially grew unrestricted net assets of the College while producing and maintaining balanced budgets.
President Nyre continues to serve on the boards of numerous non-profit organizations. He and his wife, the former Kelli McIntyre, reside in New Rochelle, N.Y. with their four wonderful children. He is the College’s first President who is not a Christian Brother.
