Welcome to the Drake High School Music Department, an exciting community of student and professional musicians.
We offer a diverse curriculum that serves a variety of student interests and pushes them to excel in those areas. Our program is built upon some fundamental beliefs that drive everything we do here:
- We believe that all students should have an opportunity to experience the joy of playing music and grow as musicians.
- We believe that music education should be both authentic and flexible, reflecting real life experiences.
- We believe that music education should include a look at both traditional and modern forms of performance.
- We believe that students should have a solid grasp on the fundamentals of technique, music theory, and performance techniques which they can use to reach advanced forms of expression.
- We believe that students should have the opportunity to interpret classic music,as well as be creative.
- We believe that students should have the opportunity to perform in both large and small ensembles as team players and soloists, supplying music for their community and beyond.
- We believe that students should take part in music during all four years of high school, gaining diverse performance opportunities, connecting with professionals, experiencing growth towards advanced repertoire, and taking on the role of both the team player and leader.
