Art District pioneer Dray opens new gallery, completes “Year of the Buddha”
LAS VEGAS (April 6, 2015) – Dray, one of the pioneers of the Arts District as both artist and gallery owner, is bringing it back home in more ways than one. After several years away from Las Vegas exploring the “investigative field of experience,” Dray has returned to the heart of 18B with Dray Studio & Gallery, a second-floor space in the Arts Factory that currently features his 12-month series “Year of the Buddha.” Dray – known for his colorful portraits of beautiful women, musically themed abstract canvasses and large scale murals – celebrates the latest chapter in his career with grand opening on Friday, April 11, to be followed Saturday, May 30 with a celebration of the completion of his “Year of the Buddha.”
Highly regarded by veterans of the Vegas visual arts scene for his efforts in helping cultivate the cultural zone that now plays host to monthly First Friday festivals, Dray dedicated a 12-month period almost exclusively to abstract depictions of the Buddha inspired by a month-long stay in Sri Lanka in 2006. His subsequent travels to Atlanta and San Francisco ¬allowed him to gain insight that influenced the direction of his career and honed his artistic vision, which he brought back to Las Vegas last year along with a rejuvenated spirit.
That inspiration manifested in his “Year of the Buddha” cycle, which allowed him to evolve his current creative trek via more than 60 depictions of the historical figure who’s teachings founded Buddhism. “The most challenging thing was to keep the subject interesting,” he told Las Vegas Weekly in March. Each blank canvas begat a new idea, inspired the next approach or pushed Dray’s talents to new limits. As his focus remained within the framework of one infinitely influential spiritual figure, he attained an artistic enlightenment he could not have foreseen.
The last chance to see “Year of the Buddha” is May 30, when Dray will host a final viewing accompanied by music, dance and body painting at Dray Studio & Gallery, 107 E. Charleston Blvd., #225, located upstairs on the west side of the Arts Factory. Remaining unsold works will be available for purchase, while the artist will continues to accept commission for future Buddha-themed canvasses and murals.
