The College of Fine Arts and Communication is home to the schools of Art & Design, Communication, Music, and Theatre & Dance, at East Carolina University.
Our college traces its history back to the very beginning of East Carolina University. In 1909, the first group of ten faculty members hired by Robert Wright to instruct the students of East Carolina Teachers College included an art teacher and a music teacher. Theatre and oral communication were also regular offerings from the start. While our programs have grown and changed significantly over the last century, they continue to play a central role in the life of ECU. In 2003, the Schools of Art and Design and Music were combined with the departments of Theatre and Dance and Communication to form the College of Fine Arts and Communication. We are proud to have been part of the founding of this university and look forward to a new century of programmatic distinction.
In addition to the Schools of Art and Design, Communication, Music, and Theatre and Dance, our college is also the home to the Institute of Outdoor Theatre—an important resource for presenters of outdoor drama around the world—and the S. Rudolph Alexander Performing Arts Series—a fine arts series designed to bring world-class performances to our campus and our community. The S. Rudolph Alexander Performing Arts Series brings the arts to Eastern Carolina Attractions include music, dance, theatre and more. We also have a performing arts series for children, Family Fare. Please visit our website at http://www.ecu.edu/artscomm/ for a complete list of all attractions, dates, and times under our programs.
This is the College where the brightest are taught by the best. And teach we do. From traditional students to advanced degree candidates studying from a distance, from church musicians and clergy to young composers across the nation, from five-year-old violists to adolescent artists at summer camp, to the general public enjoying a lecture, viewing a documentary, exhibition, performance, or seeing the fruits of our interns, we are the arts in eastern North Carolina.
