Iconic statute of mother and child at Basildon town centre aka 'Bas Vegas' as the locals refer to it. The place could certainly do with a facelift as the general surroundings seem rundown. Probably suffering the impacts of a cash crunch from the local council having to find savings due to spending cuts...

Eastgate, Unfortunately like most Shopping Mall's has Empty Stores, But still Manages to Attract Shoppers, The Range of Shops is Varied , And the Shopper should be able to Find the items They are looking for. Its Clean and Well Maintained, Disabled Folk have Lifts to the Upper Level, Where there is Several Fast Food Restaurants. Escalators are Available in the Mall and Also from the Car Park , These a Of a Moving " Pavement " type not " Stepped". There are Police Patrols to Offer a Sense of Safety, However Their Present is not Intrusive . Disabled Parking is Available. Would Definitely Recommend a Visit .

What can I say, the Christmas festival has been on since the end of November & it has been lit! Sausages, Beer, Yorkshire pudding, defo must try for a varied taste of euro hand foods. Oh & if you get to Eastgate give Marta's Chimney Cakes a try, it's a lovely little cafe with the most splendid proprietoress I cannot overstate how excellent this woman is, if her hand touches baking... I am willing to eat it., they serve lunch & breakfast, do a large range of coffees & teas, oh & the cakes THE FREAKING CAKES!! I started going to Eastgate after training on Saturday mornings for a nice cup of coffee & a relaxing walk around... I found Marta's & have been a regular Saturday customer, for a double shot black & whatever cake she places in front of me. Oh wait... this was to be about Eastgate... Eastgate quite a good haunt... it contains Marta's Chimney Cakes.

Gone down hill massively, most of the good shops just seem to be closing down one by one. Such a shame as it used to be a pretty decent shopping centre. There are still the odd few good shops like new look, Primark and river island, the entertainer. Food court is pretty rubbish now too.

I live very close to the town and do about 90% of all my shopping around here, only heading to Lakeside which is a little drive around Christmas or if I need work things like a suit, shirt i.e work stuff Basildon seems to lack this sort of thing. Other than that Eastgate has plenty of shops and places to eat. Over the last 5 years there has been a big effort to encourage happy shoppers with things happening around Christmas, Halloween, Easter and so on.

Clean, trouble free shopping centre. Shame about the amount of shops now closed but investment is booming at the moment so that should change when the new bits are finished this year.

Sadly I've watched the eastgate go gradually downhill from a place I would recommend to somewhere to avoid. Most of the good shops have been priced out so all that remains are a few cheap places and those trying to hang on. Sad times for sure.
