El Adobe de Capistrano

Description

El Adobe de Capistrano, or simply known as El Adobe, is a restaurant located in San Juan Capistrano, California. It has been operated since 1948 and is in a building composed of two historic adobes near Mission San Juan Capistrano. It is also famous for being frequented by and being a favorite of U.S. President Richard Nixon who lived in nearby San Clemente. The adobe which comprises the northern portion of the restaurant was built as the home of Miguel Yorba in 1797. The southern portion, from 1812, was the Juzgado (court and jails). The Juzgado’s jail cell now serves as the restaurant's wine cellar and is rumored to harbor a ghost. In addition there have been reports of a headless friar in front of the restaurant. In 1910, Georgia Mott Vander-Leck bought the two properties, combining them for use as her home and store. In 1948, Mr. Clarence Brown established the El Adobe restaurant, opening it on July 8, 1948 for the wedding and reception of the First Commandant of Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base, General Fagan. While in office, former President Richard Nixon whose nearby San Clemente home was known as the Western White House, visited the restaurant many times. The restaurant was originally continental cuisine, but after comments by Nixon, it gained attention for its Mexican fare and changed the menu.

Only our second visit to El Adobe, and WE LOVE IT! The building, the decor is all authentic and like stepping into a time capsule. The wait staff are wonderfully attentive without being overbearing or overly present. The food is always sumptuous and delightful, and our tummies are always full, and tastebuds tantalized. We will be back, of course. I've had their Cadillac Margarita and it IS Delicious.
This is one of the oldest restaurants in San Juan Capistrano. I had heard that former President Nixon helped make it more popular and so I was excited to go for dinner. The cheese enchiladas we're very tasty; the sauce was very zesty and the refried beans and rice were delicious. They have Charro beans and black beans as well for sides. The polite service was really fast and the salsa was really good with the chips. There is a nice bar in the front with some openings to the street Camino Capistrano as well as different rooms throughout the restaurant where you can sit and enjoy your food with company. They even have facilities for banquets or weddings or other fiestas. There is also an outdoor garden area for events that is very pretty at night, with an alter-like area, streamed lights and the evening sky! There is a table that is devoted to former President Nixon just passed the front area kind of across the hallway from the restrooms. It's the second table on your right, and it has the pictures shown including his autograph.
First time Visitor. This is a historic landmark. Restaurant has an old feel Adobe style. Food was delicious. Spacious indoor dining area, full bar where food can be served and an outdoor dining area. Servers are very attentive. Plenty of parking at the rear of the buildingFood: 4/5
Historic place with a lot of spanish charm. My wife and I split the 2 taco combo and each had a Cadillac Margarita. Good food and drinks. Great service and Spanish atmosphere. Food was good but wasn't the best Mexican food. Definitely want to make reservations. We got lucky on a Friday for lunch and got a table.Food: 4/5
This is the second time I've been back the first time the freshest food. The second time my mahi mahi blackened fish tacos were like eating old shoe leather. I can just tell when food is not fresh , I eat plenty of fish tacos. The only thing I can praise is the beans and rice , and the El Adobe itself has historic significance in itself. Not to mention they actually went to the white house to make President Nixon his favorite plate , which is on the menu . Ironically his favorite is not anything seafood, that should of told me something. They switched it out for some sub par beef taquitos I wouldn't recommend. And the chips at the table were overly salty, that reminded me of a salt lick . I drove all the way from the Inland Empire just to eat here , and my expectations were high. Now it's questionable if I'll be back , I'm researching other notable restaurants in the area .
I veered off from my group to visit this place just for the nostalgic appeal. I found the converted wine cellar interesting and was very glad that I stopped and checked it out before leaving the area.Atmosphere: 5/5
Great restaurant! The food was great, we really liked the deserts. I recommend the fried ice cream and churros. The restaurant is historic and has tons of character. Food pricing wasn’t too bad. I Recommend going there.
Wow, outstanding traditional Mexican food. I was here visiting from Texas - where we love our Tex-Mex food. This is not Tex-Mex. This is old school Mexican food and it’s awesome. Great street tacos Taco Tuesday and a great menu. The actual building is legit - huge, beautiful, authentic. Apparently this is the place that President Nixon loved - and you will too.
Excellent food, great service and ambience. I was craving Mexican food after my 10 hr flight from UK and El Adobe did not disappoint! I ordered the table side guacamole, an El Presidente Margarita with a sugared rim and a shot of amaretto, and mole chicken enchiladas. I left with my Mexican mojo restored! Highly recommend.Recommended dishesSalsa and Chips, Mole Enchiladas, Guacamole Made Fresh
Amazing ambiance and above average Mexican cuisine. There was an actual harp player and continuous music. He even came table side to play for people while they ate. Service was way beyond expectations. Real authentic feel here. Lots of stairs to different levels and even a special place for private parties or wedding receptions. Very lively atmosphere Vegetarian options: Mexican food is diverse enough to make veggies options Parking: Across the street parking near swallows Kid-friendliness: Kids menu available and high chairs Wheelchair accessibility: First floor
