Here right now, first time having Puerto Rican food, went strictly off the reviews, the reviews are on point! Went with my girl, she is from PR, her first time here as well, she confirmed the authenticity, the food is FANTASTIC! WILL be coming back!
Love the food from El Caldero Boricua; Luis and Wilfredo are the owners/sous chef/chefs/waiters/busboys of the restaurant -they do everything!!! Luis and Wilfredo are great people, they offer great service, and are super friendly. The food is delicious, in fact, it's the best in town. They serve large portions that, most of the time, I end up bringing leftovers home. Nevertheless, the reasons I give a 3 star rating are: 1. The place needs TLC, it looks dirty and run down; it truly is a hole in the wall, but with the most amazing Puerto Rican cuisine. 2. Be aware that is cash only. 3. I recommend that you call before going, because their schedule varies.
Take it from a puertorrican, this is the best puertorrican food you can get overall in Houston. While not all the items in the menu are all the time, they only accept cash, and it can take a while to get the order out, it's all worth it! Recommendations: call first and order by phone so when you get there you don't have to wait too much.
I love puerto rican food. Growing up I've eaten a lot of home cooked PR cuisine at friends houses. When I moved to Houston I immediately searched for PR restaurants..i think there was 1 or 2 in town but far from me.Then Caldero opened up 5 minutes drive from me..the food was excellent and the hospitality top notch. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting some good Puerto Rican food.
Just to let you know that we came to Houston from Oklahoma and I had an urge to eat some alcapurrias and guess what , not were you closed for the 4th of July also for repairs and nothing was said on the inter net or website. My wife and I were very disappointed, Maybe next time that we are in town.
Everyone reviewing here is insane. Place looks nasty.. came here a while back and asked to used the bathroom. Told me if I was going to piss or crap because the toilet won't flush?. Really.. food was mediocre. I'll stick to Tex chic or senor juan
Investigate and fine for Health Code Violations!!! Is this an underground business? No ATM or credit cards accepted. I DID NOT see any CITY PERMITS or Health and Food Services posted on the walls. The setup looked dubious. Staff did not understand orders in Spanish. We noticed that an employee dropped a scooper and picked up from the floor for use at the buffet section. Needless to say, we left without ordering.
My family is originally from PR and this as close to "home" cooking as a boricua can find in the Houston area.
Good mofongo. The guys are really hospitable and work hard in the kitchen.
Drove from humble and was worth the drive! Will be back!
