El Campo Santo Cemetery

Description

El Campo Santo is a cemetery located at the Workman and Temple Family Homestead Museum, 15415 East Don Julian Road, in City of Industry, California. As one of the oldest private cemeteries in Southern California, El Campo Santo contains the remains of the pioneering Workman-Temple family as well as Pío Pico, the last governor of Alta California, and other prominent pioneer families. Within its low brick walls, the one-half acre cemetery features a Neoclassical mausoleum and a small cemetery plot surrounded by a Gothic Revival cast-iron fence. In the early 1850s, the family of William Workman (1799-1867) established El Campo Santo, or "the sacred ground," as a cemetery solely for the use of their family. Along with a cemetery plot enclosed by an ornate cast-iron fence, they built a Gothic Revival brick chapel dedicated to Saint Nicholas by Bishop Thaddeus Amat of Los Angeles. Among the first to be buried here was William Workman's brother David Workman (1797 - 1855), who was killed in an accident while driving cattle to the gold fields in Northern California.

What a historical treasure! The history says it all when you walk thru the gate or even walk past it while on the sidewalk! Astonishing to read the headstones and the information posted on the site! To see the actual grave markers strewn throughout the sidewalks and streets is mind boggling! Amazing tourist attraction with so much history! Is a must see/visit if you're in the area! It's won't be a disappointment and you'll happy you did!
Great little cemetery not to be missed if you're in Old Town. Overall you won't have to spend a lot of time here but even 5-10 minutes would be worth it to walk around, read a bit about the history and some of the people buried here. Then head towards town and look under your feet on the sidewalks for the gravesites taken by development.
This is a small but historical cementery. It is just a few blocks away from the cities most haunted building! When walking by the graves, you definitely feel a sense of respect. A lot of the grave sites have white fencing around them while others have rocks outlining their location. I remember as a child, I visited this cementery a lot for school field trips. We were told that a lot of people have had spiritual activities/ghost sightings at this cementery. I've never experienced such thing though. I always feel at peace and in aw when walking through this place. Highly recommend stopping by!
I love this place. So peaceful and full of history. I love the plaques with all the information on them. There is a list of names of people buried through out Old Town and spots of unmarked graves. It is well taken care of, gifts are left for some of the graves. I enjoy this place so much and come as often as I can. This last time I came at night, it was a real treat to experience it in another light. Also, “Yankee” Jim is buried here. He is one of the spirits said to haunt the Whaley and Crosthwaite house. Which is just a few yards down the road.
Extremely old and historical cemetery right in the heart of the hustle and bustle of Old Town San Diego. Simply amazing to walk around and pay your respects to some of the founding ancestors of the city. A must see if you are in Old Town San Diego. This small cemetery is full of history. I truly enjoyed walking through and paying my respects. It made me happy to see how well preserved it is. I also liked that all the visitors respected the area. I didn't see any ghost but I did leave an offering for the little girl. I left an ojo de venado. P.S... watch out for the giant roaches
Cool historical cemetery. One of the gravestones has an unsolved mystery. Someone who was buried on a certain date but wasn't recorded dead until a few months later.
One of the most peaceful sites in the entire city. An absolute spectacle to see in person. This is one of the original cemeteries in modern day California. The history here is unmistakable. A must visit.
Really cool little piece of history to check out. Especially at night.
Beautiful historic cemetery in Old Town. Some markers are even on the side walk. A must see.
