We are an all volunteer fire department serving the citizens of Wirt County and have been doing so proudly since 1939.
The Elizabeth Volunteer Fire Department is an all volunteer fire department located in Wirt County, West Virginia. The fire department is the only fire department located in Wirt County and covers protects 234 square miles and serves approximately 6,000 people. The fire department currently has 32 active members and operates 3 engines, 1 tanker, 1 rescue, 2 brush trucks, and 2 boats. The fire department is a class 6 ISO rated fire department. In 2012 the Elizabeth Volunteer Fire Dpeartment responded to 170 calls. These calls ranged from structural, vehicle, and brush fires, car accidents, water rescue calls, hazardous materials, BLS medical first response, and service calls such as storm clean-up, rock slides, and utility pole issues. The fire department was orgainized in 1939 by a local group of men who felt the need for a firefighting force. The two original fire trucks were hose carts that were pulled through the streets of Elizabeth by fireman to the call. The Elizabeth VFD still has one of the carts and is in the process of revitalizing the unit.
