Elkhorn Area Fire Department.
Serving since 1885
The department began in 1885 and has grown into one of the busiest departments in Walworth County. The building at 34 S Wisconsin Street is the oldest fire station still standing, currently used as a private business. Also the current City Hall once served as the fire station. Three garage doors were located on the west side of the station facing Broad Street.
The first fire engine was purchased for approximately $1000.00. The single pump engine was the sole apparatus manned by 34 volunteer firemen. Eventually a hose tender was acquired for use with the engine.
The rescue squad was formed in 1954. At this time it operated as a separate entity from the fire department. In 2003 the rescue squad merged with the fire department and the EMS Division was formed. The ambulance operates today at the Advanced EMT level. The station is staffed with one Advanced EMT 24 hours a day 7 days a week 365 days a year.
Today the department boasts 3 Med units, 2 engines, 2 quints, a heavy rescue as well as a grass rig.
Together our department runs over 1300 calls per year.
Fire Suppression -
When homes or building are threatened by fire it is the responsibility of the fire department to protect life and property. Your Elkhorn Area Fire Department is experienced and well trained. It is the department's goal to protect life and minimize property and financial loss.
The Fire Division is also responsible for responding to motor vehicle accidents as well as technical rescue calls. In cooperation with area departments Elkhorn firefighters are trained in rope rescue as well as Hazardous Materials response.
Daily routine at the fire station includes public safety education through school visits and public interaction. The Fire Division is also responsible for performing fire inspections on all business and apartment buildings.
EMS Division -
Your Elkhorn EMS Division operates at the Advanced (AEMT) level. What does that mean? This means that the licensed AEMT is capable of starting intravenous lines for drug administration and fluid replacement. We carry medication and equipment essential to respiratory emergencies, metabolic emergencies, trauma and cardiac events. All members are American Heart Association CPR trained. We are also equipped with the Zoll AutoPulse, a non invasive cardiac support pump. The AutoPulse allows for our AEMT's to perform other necessary skills while patients still receive high quality CPR. The AutoPulse was donated by Aurora Healthcare in 2014.
The EMS Division regularly holds blood pressure screenings for the public, and is also capable of instructing CPR and first aid to citizens.
The Elkhorn Area Fire Department responds to 911 calls in the City of Elkhorn, Town of Sugar Creek, Town of Lafayette, and Town of Geneva including Geneva National. In total the department protects 25,000 people in an area of 100 square miles.
