Elks Lodge 1897

Description

We are...

•A fraternal order with nearly a million members and a 141-year history.

•A network of more than 2000 lodges in communities all over the country.

•A generous charitable foundation that each year gives millions in scholarships, an inspiration to youth, a friend to veterans and more.

Our Mission

To inculcate the principles of Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love and Fidelity; to recognize a belief in God; to promote the welfare and enhance the happiness of its Members; to quicken the spirit of American patriotism; to cultivate good fellowship; to perpetuate itself as a fraternal organization, and to provide for its government, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the United States of America will serve the people and communities through benevolent programs, demonstrating that Elks Care and Elks Share.

Origin

The Elks organization was founded in New York City on February 16, 1868 under the name "Jolly Corks" by 15 actors, entertainers and others associated with the theater. In ensuing years, membership expanded to other professions.

Purposes

This Fraternal Order was founded "To promote and practice the four cardinal virtues of Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love and Fidelity; to promote the welfare and enhance the happiness of its members; to quicken the spirit of American Patriotism and cultivate good fellowship."

Membership

The Order is a non-political, non-sectarian and strictly American fraternity. Proposal for membership in the Order is only by invitation of a member in good standing. To be accepted as a member, one must be an American citizen, believe in God, be of good moral character and be at least 21 years old.

What We Do

The Order spends more than $80,000,000 every year for benevolent, educational and patriotic community-minded programs in such fields as benefitting physically handicapped children, sponsoring Elks National Foundation scholarships, scouting, athletic teams, veterans' works, a national "Hoop Shoot" free-throw contest involving more than 3 million children, physical and occupational therapy programs and patriotic programs.

The youth of our country have always been important to the Order. It is for this reason the Elks Drug Awareness Education Program was launched to warn primary grade students and their parents of the dangers in drug use. Additionally, every lodge observes June 14th as Flag Day, a tradition which the Elks began in 1907 and was later adopted by the Congress as an official observance.

First time visitor. The corn hole tournament going on was like a pro event. Auto scoring, very nice boards, downloadable app to keep up, and lots of participants. Nice people that invited us said this is a weekly thing. Mind blown. Was surprised to see participants from ElPaso, Las Cruces, and the ABQ! Didn't get a chance to try food but hope to on a return invite because it looked yummy. Drinks were good and so much more reasonable than any pub I have ever been to. Not sure how much yearly dues are but for the atmosphere and the company, I am sure it is well worth it. Hope to get invited again soon and I will update this review should I get a chance to try out the culinary options!
Best value in Alamogordo area for RVs. Gravel sites w concrete pads adjacent, full hookups. Elks Lodge is its usual friendly social environment. Office very helpful to RV tenants, incl. receiving mail and/or packages. Bonus for train romantics, freight train rumbles nearby several times per day.
Amazing atmosphere and awesome people. Outstanding place to eat.
Thanks for a fabulous trunk or treat! Safe, fun less stress and great community effort. I appreciate all those who came out this year for the kids. Looking forward to next year!
A wonderful organization that just happens to have some of the best sunsets in New Mexico.
I was there for a Memorial get together of a friend. The Elks Lodge is nice and roomy. It has wheelchair availability to enter although the doors do not open automatically. They have handicap parking. You can see it from the road. Very clean bldg. and friendly helpful people. It also has a bar that is open during certain hours. Nice, clean and roomy restrooms with a handicap stall.
Very rude. I'm new in town and this place was recommended to me. I went in and signed the guest book, and went to the bar. The bartender asked me for my Elks card, I admitted I did not have one. Being a member of the Moose Lodge, the VFW, and the American Legion I understand how these organizations work. But real quickly and rudely the bartender asked me what I was doing there, that it was a private club! I said I understand, I'm new in town and the Elks was recommend to me. Again she stated it was a private club. So I asked if I could join, she then went to get me an application. When she came back she handed me an application and said she still couldn't serve me unless someone was willing to sign me in.... crickets..... So I said guess not and said thank you for the application and left. After serving in the military for 26 years and visiting these types of clubs all over the country, I have never been treated this rudely.
We’re new to the area. We found Very friendly and informative members and staff. Looking forward to the upcoming activities. Thank You
Nice level parking, electric, water. Bar is so smoke laden, even though no one was smoking, I couldn't stay inside. Friendly staff.
Been to a few events held here over the years. Nice structure. Versatile etc. Partially paved parking lot.
