Emmaus House, located in a restored Victorian house in the Sherman Hill Neighborhood of Des Moines, IA, offers an oasis of quiet and prayer in the midst of the busyness of life.
Emmaus House Ministry, which takes its name from the story of the disciples’ encounter with Jesus on the road to Emmaus in the Gospel of Luke, was established in 1974 as a center for spiritual renewal within the Diocese of Des Moines by the Jesuits of the Wisconsin Province. Father Dan Krettek, a priest of the Diocese of Des Moines, and Cindy Shaw serve as co-directors of the ministry. Emmaus House, which is located in an 1890’s Victorian-style home in the historic Sherman Hill neighborhood of Des Moines, IA, offers easy access to spiritual direction, a quiet chapel for daily prayer and twice weekly Eucharistic celebration, directed and preached retreats, or just a place to step away from the busyness of life in order to enjoy an opportunity for silence and solitude
