English At Large is a nonprofit that provides individual and small group instruction through a volunteer network to adult immigrants and other newcomers.
Programs & Services
English At Large offers free, relevant accessible programs that help immigrants and refugees engage fully in life in the United States.
Our one-to-one tutoring, conversation groups, Beginner English and Career Access Lab program services are delivered by volunteers in 21 communities in Middlesex County.
-> ONE-TO-ONE TUTORING:
English At Large assists adults in acquiring English language skills by providing free individual tutoring to adults who are learning English as another language. These skills enable them to attain economic self-sufficiency, support their families, and become fully engaged in their community.
Students must live or work in one of the 21 communities in our service area. Tutoring occurs in public locations—usually a library—and is guided by student goals. Tutors and learners meet for two hours once per week at a mutually convenient time. Our volunteer tutors receive training and support from EAL staff.
- > CONVERSATION GROUPS:
English At Large offers English Conversation Groups on a tri-mester schedule. These groups are open to any adult English language learner with intermediate to advanced English skills. Groups are facilitated by volunteer teams and meet weekly in local libraries and other public spaces, for up to 12 weeks.
-> CAREER ACCESS LAB (CAL)
Launched in 2016, CAL integrates English language instruction with job readiness preparation. Through CAL, learners participate in career focused Conversation Groups, which offer insights into the American workplace and create a natural support system. Learners also receive one-on-one resume and cover letter writing support, mock interview practice, job search guidance and community referrals. This extensive approach to career-readiness empowers our learners to take full advantage of their professional potential.
-> BEGINNER ENGLISH CLASSES
A significant number of learners on our wait list for tutoring test as beginners in English proficiency. EAL offers Beginner English classes to these learners to engage them in service and begin their acclimation to the community. The 8-week, 16-session classroom-based program provides 24 hours of instruction in basic English communication skills, and is taught by interns or volunteers who have ESL teaching certification.
