The English Language Institute (ELI) of the Center for Global Engagement has offered innovative academic programs for students learning English as a Second Language since the late 1970’s. It belongs to the City University of New York (CUNY) through the College of Staten Island. Our course of study is designed to challenge and engage students. Students are immersed in the language, culture, and ethnicity of New York City. Classes range from beginner to the advanced level.
The goal of the English Language Institute (ELI) is to provide a quality education to a diverse population of students and to foster a language learning environment that is student-centered, task oriented, and based in American culture. Methods used in the classroom are innovative, yet proven Teaching English as a Second or Other Language (TESOL) strategies and techniques.
This mission relates to the mission of the College of Staten Island-a college that is committed to building academic programs in their initiatives, as well as their collaborations with international counterparts.

The English Language Institute at the College of Staten Island offers 18 hours per week of instruction in the Fall and Spring semesters and intensive 22 hour sessions in the summer. Classes include reading and writing, grammar, communications classes, and workshops for TOEFL/test practice. We also offer social activities during the semester, including: Culture Day, International Coffee Hours, and field excursions to Manhattan and other boroughs.
We also offer customized programs for groups. One of the most popular requests is for our community engagement activities, where students practice their English by doing volunteer work. We call this "English in Action."
