Erie International Airport

Description

Erie International Airport Tom Ridge Field is a public airport five miles southwest of Erie, in Erie County. Airline service at Erie faces stiff competition from the Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Buffalo airports, all within two hours of Erie by car. In 2004 Erie was the third fastest growing airport in the United States, and the fastest growing airport in Pennsylvania. It is also 128mi from Pittsburgh, 111mi from the Canada–US border, 95mi from Cleveland, Ohio and 105mi from Buffalo, New York.HistoryEarly historyIn 1924, Roger Griswold purchased 22.12acre of land 6mi west of Erie at the intersection of West Lake and Asbury Roads for use as an airfield. Soon after, a flight training school was based at the field. In 1927, as part of a nationwide tour by Charles Lindbergh after his transatlantic flight, Erie was selected as one of the cities where Lindbergh would make a brief stopover. However, as Griswold Field proved inadequate for the larger Spirit of St. Louis to land and an alternative site could not be located, a flyover by Lindbergh had to suffice. The affair illuminated the need for a proper airport and prompted the Erie City Council to examine to possibility of establishing a municipal airport. City Council was, initially, favoring a site 1/2mi east of Wesleyville for a municipal airport; however, Lieutenant Jimmy Doolittle commented on the distance between it and the city; Dolittle noted that "you might as well take 40 minutes more and go on to Cleveland." After recommendations made by Lindbergh to a Congressional committee that no airport less than 1mi2 be approved, the planning commission for Erie's airport began to reevaluate the site they chose.

"Erie International Airport, Tom Ridge Field is served by three major airline carriers with nonstop flights to three major cities and connections to over 1,100 different destinations."

Probably the smallest airport Ive been too. Only has one terminal and 3 flights that come in and out dialy. Make sure to get there with ample time. This is not open for negotiation. They have a small staff so after a time period you wont be able to check in or do check in bags. Call ahead of time and find out what is the window before they stop check ins. They still have classic TSA. Unlike the big airports with the new scanners, they will make you pull everything out that is food, liquids, toiletries or tech. Minor inconvinience but nothing too bad. It is what it is. Pay attention to the signs. There is a gift shop/food area but is tucked in a corner i side the loading area. Once you walk out the gate you will loose access to it. If you get stuck waiting in the general area, there's not much to do. There's some wall art and an app you can download to check out the local scene. All in all... its a unique place. Be patient, be prepare and just listen to instructions and you'll be fine.
Worst experience I have ever had at any airport. I am a 78 year old handicap woman wearing a brace on my right leg. I was running late, but I was in the airport long before the flight left. NOONE and I mean NOONE, not TSA or 2 gentlemen working near me would get me help with getting the wheelchair I scheduled to help me to the plane. Even though I watched them print a boarding pass for someone else inside the waiting area between TSA and the door to take the ramp to the plane, NOONE would help me get a boarding pass printed while my plane was still on the tarmac. I had to reschedule my flight. It took me over 32 hours with only two and one half hours sleep to get from Erie, PA to Salisbury, MD.
The security agents check things in almost every bag. It’s crazy. They go through it all and for me it was a book. The lady in front of me a pen. No other airport puts you though that. It’s boarder line an invasion of your privacy. Not cool. Just because your small does t mean you should put people though ll this scrutiny. No other airport does this. We have a list of what approved and not. It’s crazy and unnecessary.
I love how this airport takes no responsibility for anything. Its always the TSA, the airline, the rental company.. it seems every bad review is met with the response of " that's not our fault" . I understand these are seperate companies or organizations, but perhaps take some responsibility for putting them under your roof.
Ms castorina at Erie Aviation is the best I am there on a regular basis for my job and she is always well prepared and has everything I need to make my life that much easier thank you for your hard work
First of all, Erie Int'l Airport has basic facilities. Ticketing, baggage claim, security, restrooms, amenities, vending machines, restaurant and bar. But there are only two routes, Delta is gone after COVID-19, United Airline is gone from June 2 to Chicago O'Hare, and direct flights are suspended.. It makes no sense. And this airport is very expensive!!
Small and very Efficient check in process. Boarded the morning United Airlines flight from Erie to Chicago. There is another flight of UA in the Evening.
The only complaint I have is how much more expensive it is to fly from Erie.I had to fly out of Akron to get a cheap flight. They need to see about getting Spirit and Breeze airlines.
Traveled through Erie Airport south to Florida to help with sister's move. Airport itself is easy to navigate. The cafe is a nice touch, though I wish the signage "no food or beverage service on board" would have been clearer, as I was given water on my flight to Charlotte on AA. Would have probably avoided the water if I knew that. : The TSA is quick and easy, but it seems like it can get confusing when mixing pre check and regular security through the single line they had running at the time. Definitely will be flying out of Erie again, since it's local and means I won't have to pay for parking at another airport, making it a more affordable option. :
It closes 45 minutes after the final flight so it is best to have some kind of plan when you travel. Otherwise, the building is streamline and simple, which is helpful.
