My car was stolen and because I wasn’t in town—despite calling 911 —they couldn’t take a police report because I wasn’t there to sign the report. First inconvenience… When I got back to town I called Officer Griffin who told me that I could file a police report, but they would have to pick up the car immediately and I would be charged for the towing fees. He was apologetic and offered to talk to The supervising Sergeant. He came back saying There wasn’t any other options. Wait, so the police did nothing to investigate the crime and I’m going to have to pay for the towing/storage fees? You see my car had been found I have a very good idea who stole it, but now the Humboldt County Sheriff’s office had tagged the car for removal since the car was “abandoned.” I called the sheriff’s office and explained what happened and told him I was working on getting the car picked up. So I was the victim of a crime and the police because they make the victim pay clearly incentivizing NOT filing a report. I spent hours sorting out what to do with my now picked over car. I was finally able to donate The car to a charity. Perhaps had the police department done their job, or at least been creative enough to come up with another solution, I would of had a different experience, but in this Instance the only person who “paid” was me! It ridiculous to charge somebody who has been a victim of a crime any sort of fees. The police department needs to figure out a different way because I heard from someone else this is not the first time this has happened. In fact, I was told someone was killed in a hit-and-run and they actually, believe it or not, tried to have the family pay the towing fees!!
Eureka police Department has always come when we needed them. We live across from the Adorni center and there’s a lot of activity in the parking lot and sometimes They’ve had to come to break up fights, get people out of there that were making too much noise,..even dealing with abandon cars. And then a couple times they had to come when we called because there was some serious dangerous stuff going on, peoples lives in jeopardy. But they always come and sometimes it takes a few minutes, but usually it’s right away. We appreciate them very much, thank you Eureka Police Department and officers ‍ ‍ Sincerely Tami ‍
This is a small department responsible for policing a large city, which definitely has its fair share of crime, tweakers, mentally ill, homeless, etc. In my opinion they do an excellent job with the limited amount of officers they have. They respond to calls fast, do good traffic enforcement but are also fair and will frequently issue warnings if you are respectful to them. I sometimes volunteer my time doing my own "patrols" watching for DUI drivers, etc. The first few times the officers noticed me they ran my plate then it seemed they realized I was on their side. I also report gas prices for the Gas Buddy app, so during my rounds at night to every gas station in the county, I feel that I am an extra set of eyes and ears on the road for them. I caught a suspect that allegedly broke a window to a 3rd St shop one morning, he happened to walk right by me after hearing his description over the radio, I called in his location and an officer was there taking him into custody within a minute. Also found a suspect who allegedly broke into a car about 5 blocks away from where the officers were, he took off on me so called it in, not sure if they were able to apprehend that one. Regardless, I've always been thanked for calling in what I see, and the nights that I'm out reporting gas prices and doing my "patrols", I see officers that are very fair to the citizens they come into contact with for whatever reasons. I always remind people, don't bash the police when you see 2 or 3 cars at a traffic stop. They are running one-man cars, and in my years of experience as an explorer where I went through almost the entire police academy, I can honestly say that pulling over a vehicle is the single most dangerous thing a police officer can do. There is NO such thing as a "routine" traffic stop. You never know who's behind the wheel until you walk up to that car, or what they may have as far as weapons, what they may be running from, etc. So when you see 2 or more cars at a traffic stop, think about how you would feel approaching an unknown vehicle with unknown number of people in the car in the middle of the night by yourself.... you wouldn't want to be alone. Good job EPD, know that I'll always have your 6 when you see me out there.
I've had to call EPD several times over the last couple of months. Every time, the dispatchers and officers were professional and courteous. They responded promptly. They do the best with what they're given, and I appreciate their service.
Just read the guest opinion of EPD chief Mills. Some of us in this community are still concerned by the deaths years ago of Sheri Moore- Martin Cobb and the young man gunned down in a gully around the same time by a presently employed EPD cop. Its also quite distressing to hear of the man just shot in Fresno- several times on the ground and the numerous black men etc that are continually shot/ murdered however you want to call it . Mills did not make any mention of cleaning the ranks of police departments of amped up aggressive control freaks that happen to be police officers- let alone start holding them accountable for their actions that are consistently criminal in nature. Its unfortunate but understandable his concern over the Dallas police officers being shot. This sort of thing is likely to happen more frequently with the news coming out about shootings by police nation wide - which cannot be condoned .
Special thank you to Officer White, for helping us get one very stubborn lady to take her medicine. People rarely mention the small deeds the police do every day, so I'm going to share this one. Keep up the good work, and thanks again!
There is no honor in your job anymore. You are just a bunch of red coats who like to abuse their Authority. This is why we teach our children not to trust the police
EPD is a great police department, they care for the disabled & the mentally ill, they been there for me, all these years, god bless the EPD.
Eureka Police are efficient in most areas but are very slow in responding to animal abuse cases.
These people work hard and put themselves in danger for us. Always have a great experience with them.
