I recently went to Belgium and England with two friends in search of special antique pieces to purchase and send back to the States. We had access to “trade only” sources and were able to select from some superb collections. Our focus was to procure antique pieces with strong design elements and great visual appeal combined with historical relevance. We only purchased furniture that demanded our attention and that was not something that can be commonly found in the states. Our selection criteria also required furniture that was useful with storage space and display capabilities. In short, we wanted exceptional furniture that would be great looking and functional as well as unique.
Some of my favorite finds are French. We bought a French walnut dough bin table with a fabulous patina that dates to about 1840. The wood top has that satiny feel of age from use by the baker for the last 170 years. The table has been carefully waxed and polished by an English craftsman and will be ready to go straight into a loving home.
I also fell in love with an English tavern table. The table has a time worn wood top on a cast iron base with the original red paint. I can just picture the Pub lads leaning on the table enjoying a pint of ale in the evening. The table must have been silent witness to many a celebratory toast or boastful tale. Tavern tables work beautifully behind a sofa, in a hallway or entranceway.
Additionally, we bought some chandeliers that are very special. One is made of bronze and features a figural motif of a Scandinavian god blowing a horn. I believe that the god is the Norse god of light, which would be appropriate for a chandelier! Another chandelier has traditional blue and white delft embellishments for an old world Dutch motif. Both pieces are appealing for their unique qualities and show stopping appearances and are only two of eight lighting pieces brought back from Europe.
One of the more quirky acquisitions is a fabulous large antique wine barrel dining table that seats six. You have to see it in person to fully appreciate its appeal and understand why we just had to have it.
Sideboards and bookcases with glass pane windows are some of the pieces that will look marvelous in a home and serve as storage and a display focal point. I have at least two that are my personal favorites.
Our trip was so successful that we were able to hand pick over 50 pieces of furniture plus chandeliers and other decorative items for a limited time special event. The entire selection has been polished and waxed and ready to go at the showroom located at 51 N Center St, Corry PA. We are planning a first showing event for March 15 (10am to 5pm) & Sunday, March 16th (11am to 4pm). The container sale will continue on the weekends until the end of April.
