Everson Museum of Art

Description

The Everson Museum of Art in Downtown Syracuse, New York is a major Central New York museum focusing on American art.HistoryThe museum was founded in 1897 by art historian George Fisk Comfort (who also helped found the Metropolitan Museum of Art); at that time, it was called the Syracuse Museum of Fine Arts. In 1911, it announced that it would seek to collect only American art.Over time the museum occupied several different buildings, including the Onondaga Savings Bank and the Syracuse Public Library, but it outgrew each facility. In 1941, Helen Everson made a gift to the city of Syracuse for the purpose of erecting an art museum. A groundbreaking took place in 1965, and in 1968 the new Everson Museum of Art opened. The new building was designed by internationally acclaimed architect I. M. Pei, and is regarded as a work of art in its own right. The Everson Museum collaborates with Light Work and the Urban Video Project (UVP) to exhibit video art on the facade of the building, including important works by Bill Viola, Jenny Holzer, William Wegman, among others. In the summer time, they host a film series which is very popular for residents of Syracuse. The Everson Museum of Art is also a famous location for skateboarders. Although illegal, on June 21, better known as National Go Skateboarding Day, skateboarders are allowed to skate at the museum. Central New York skateboarders often have signs that say "FREE eVe" meaning free the Everson Museum of Art.

"The Everson is a museum of firsts. It was the first museum to dedicate itself to the collection of American art, to create a permanent collection of ceramics, to collect video art, to create a docent program and to hire the now internationally-known architect I.M. Pei to design its building, a sculptural work of art in its own right. The Everson is home to more than 10,000 works of art: American paintings, sculpture, drawings, video, graphics and one of the largest holdings of international ceramics in the nation. The Everson is located in Syracuse, New York, across from the Oncenter on Harrison and State Streets."

The best art museum in Syracuse.. They have a tremendous glass and pottery collection which is unfortunately no longer on permanent display except for selected pieces. Good changing exhibitions.
Beautiful place for Art lover. I could only visit two floors, rest two were undergoing renovation. The ceramic section was wonderful.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot surePrice for adult entry$6–10

It was a beautiful building with lots of modern abstract art. The only problems were the harsh long concrete stairs and concrete architecture. It reminds me of an abandoned artist’s homeless shelter. I was not that happy after looking at these art work, and usually I feel good after visiting an art museum.
Spectacular gem in our city. Love the exhibits, the staff, and the market days!
A wonderful building designed by EM Pei, best known for the iconic Louvre pyramid.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$6–10
This museum was a fun place to visit for an afternoon. The art was abstract and fun to look at. There was a curator who was very helpful in giving details on the pieces which again was very useful on some of the very abstract pieces. My favorite section of the museum was the bottom level, the pottery section. Would definitely recommend to visters for a quiet afternoon.
I went for the Christmas event this year and it was a lot of fun, they had a scavanger hunt to enter a raffle and they had a lot of unique christmas decorations by local groups and buisnesses - all for sale. They also had their usual modern art exhibits.Visited onPublic holidayWait timeNo waitPrice for adult entry$6–10
As a sculptor I was hoping to see more of the genre. The space was very large open and cold but when you enter some of the smaller spaces the art seemed to warm up the space in a gentle soft manner. I enjoyed the paintings in the lower space. A few Jackson Pollocks. Warhol and Other pop artists Over all worth, an enjoyable quiet afternoon of reflection in a museum well curated with enough seating to really observe some great work
My son and I always enjoy ourselves at the museum and we feel extremely grateful to have such a wonderful place to visit and to check out the art exhibits as often as we do!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot surePrice for adult entryFree
