The Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies at Harvard University is one of the world’s leading centers for the study of China, bringing together leading researchers at Harvard with their counterparts from around the globe to share methods, approaches, and data pertaining to a wide range of questions related to contemporary and historical China.
Named for John King Fairbank 費正清 (1907-1991), the leading figure in 20th-century American Chinese studies, the Fairbank Center directly supports research and teaching at Harvard University. In addition to maintaining a specialized library for contemporary China research, the Center administers faculty research projects, offers student grants for language study, and supports field research, conference travel, and interdisciplinary training for doctoral students. The Center also provides grants for the publication of prize-winning new scholarship on China.
Every year, the Fairbank Center runs an active program of seminars, workshops, and conferences, which provide lively forums for inquiry and debate. Participants include the Center’s more than 200 faculty and affiliates, along with more than 150 doctoral students, postdoctoral fellows, visiting scholars, and professionals, from the United States and all parts of the Chinese world, as well as from Japan, Korea, Australia, and Europe.
Founded in 1955, the Fairbank Center exists to advance scholarship in all fields of Chinese studies at Harvard. We do this in many ways, sponsoring seminars and conferences, supporting faculty and student research, maintaining Harvard’s research library for contemporary China, hosting postdoctoral fellows, visiting scholars, and associates in research, and publishing new research. The Center strives to involve all members of the Harvard community – undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, staff, and alumni – in its intellectual life, and has always relied as well on a high level of participation of faculty from sister institutions in greater Boston and across New England. In addition, the Center works closely with the other international centers and institutes, and with the Harvard Center Shanghai in particular, to promote the study of global issues on campus and to expand Harvard’s global reach in mainland China, Taiwan, and the greater Sinophone world.
