About Me
My name is Patty and I am a Mom of 3. I have teenage girl who is about to start high school (God help me!) and two rambunctious little boys who are 6 and 8.
My career started out as a professional photographer. Photography was my passion. So much so that I likely worked for every photographic retail outlet in Canada just so that I could get discounts on photo equipment. However, I loved food. I applied to George Brown College for Culinary Arts and got accepted but holding a camera in my hands was more of a draw then holding a whisk. I applied to Sheridan College for photography and went that route. I eaked out a living doing all sorts of photography but food and anything that had to do with it ALWAYS called to me.
I am a hardcore foodie. Cookbooks are my bedtime reading. Never before has food and the process of making things from scratch been more important to me then when I was diagnosed with cancer. Melanoma. That bugger got me good and I lost my right-leg above the knee to it just over 5 years ago. I’m good now and officially in remission.
When you’re sick like that there is a lot of waiting. Therefore to keep me busy I decided put my vast collection of cookbooks and hours of watching The Food Network to good use. I was drawn to baking. Baking does not yield results until the final product comes out of the oven or finishes cooling. Whereas when you cook, you can taste as you go, tweak and adjust until it is exactly how you want it to taste. Baking taught me patience and the importance of being thorough. That technique was just as important as the ingredients you use. Also that the most satisfying thing on the planet is seeing your family and friends greedily devour something you’ve slaved over for hours, sometimes even days, and have their eyes roll into the back of their heads in satisfaction. That reaction makes all the yucky stuff I went through when I was sick worth it.
I am completely self-taught with the exception of a couple of cake decorating classes I took at my local Bulk Barn. I am a big believer that it’s better to do a few things well then to do a whole lot of things just halfway. I make simple, delicious small-batch baked goods with high quality ingredients. What I make may not be the fanciest stuff you’ve seen but I promise that it’ll be some the tastiest. Baking brought me comfort especially during the most difficult time in my life. I hope that when you taste some of my baked goods that you’ll feel that comfort too. Who doesn’t want a comfort in the form of a moist chocolate cupcake with fudgy chocolate frosting that’s filled with homemade salted-caramel that dribbles down your chin when you take bite?
