Father Hennepin State Park

Description

Father Hennepin State Park is a state park of Minnesota, USA, located on the southeast corner of Mille Lacs Lake. The park is named after Father Louis Hennepin, a priest who visited the area with a French expedition in 1680. The 320acre park has 103 campsites and a sandy beach over one mile (1.6 km) long.WildlifeHawks, ospreys, owls, and eagles are common raptors found in this park. Mammalian tracks of beaver, raccoon, mink and deer are often seen by visitors in the soft earth or snow. Northern pike, walleye, bluegills, sunfish and bass swim around this park's lake. The aspen stands and small clearings are set up for ruffed grouse. Squirrels and chipmunks thrive in maple and oak stands. The small ponds and streams provide homes for amphibians and insects, which in turn attract larger fish, birds and mammals.

The walking trails were nice and easy for people that need flat level walking. I would think that even someone in a wheelchair would be able to do most of the walking trails. The spots were a bit shorter and closer together than other State Parks we have been to, but not as bad as some private campgrounds. The bath/shower room was clean and regularly checked on. The latches on the toliet and shower stalls were bent and difficult to latch. The gap on the woman's shower stalls were extremely wide. All of the workers we interacted with were very pleasant and helpful. This is a nice park and we will be camping here again.
Great state park to camp at! We stayed at the Maple grove campground which was nice! The beach area and restrooms were within walking distance. Crazy amount of mosquitoes and caterpillars though!
The park is stunning, trail is good with nice scenery. There are two shelters, around the beautiful beach and another like .7 miles away from the beach. When you enter the park the picnic area comes first and then the beach. I liked the camp grounds facing the shore and it was calm. The sun rise would have been amazing. The shoreline is cool as well. The bathrooms were neat as well compared to other parks i have been. Must go place for the lake. Not much fall colors at this time though.
Great beach and grassy area with picnic tables. Water was warm, shallow, lots of weeds. There were two places to launch boats or paddleboards. Rangers were helpful and friendly.
We visited the park with our dog, and she had a refreshing dip in the lake. Then we hiked a half mile to the "pope point", where you can enjoy a great view of Mille Lacs lake and in the distance you can see Spider Island towards the left side. It's a small park, the full loop is probably under an hour and a half.
Small compared to other park but has stunning hikes along the shore. Closed in winter but you can hike in. It has an amazing beach and picnic/grill area that usually has a breeze to keep to bugs away. Bathrooms by the beach are stinky and dated. Pet friendly, leash required.
Always lovely experience when we visit this park! We are visiting this park for fall colors for the past three years! Fantastic beach side view, with kids play area swing, slide!! Hiking place! Good trails!
My family and I always try to come here at least once a year especially late September/early October. Everytime we have come here we've always been happy with how beautiful it is. It's very clean and beautiful. I would recommend going here with your family especially your kids. I honestly cannot wait to keep coming here to make memories with my children. I would say my only complaint is that not all campers respect your campsite. They tend to walk through and/or invade your space but that has nothing to do with the campsite it has everything with other campers. I would say just remember that when you go camping don't walk through other people's campsite especially if they have dogs.
Beautiful park with a nice beach, sand volleyball, playground, BBQ areas with picnic tables. There is a campground, fishing Pier and boat launch. Miles of great trails to hike and cross country ski in the winter.
A nice well maintained State Park. The camp sites at the Maple Grove campground do have some nice separation so you do feel like you have a bit of privacy. There is a large sand swimming beach and public areas. There are a few trails in the park itself, and some nice views of Mille Lacs Lake . You can access the Soo Line Bike trail from the park, but most of the trails within the park do not allow bikes as they are narrow. There are a few places to fish from shore, but Mille Lacs Lake is huge and a boat would work well to get you where you need to go to catch the "Big ones".
