Fike Recreation Center

Description

Fike Recreation Center, originally known as Clemson Field House, is an on-campus recreation facility at Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina. It houses several gymnasiums, a pool, a fitness atrium, racquetball courts, an indoor walk/jog/run track, and a climbing wall. The basketball team played there from 1930 to 1968, when Littlejohn Coliseum opened. The building originally opened in 1930 as the Clemson Field House, and was the indoor home to Clemson athletics. It also contained the original dressing rooms for the football team, who would leave the building, cross Williamson Rd., and make their grand entrance, running down the hill into Clemson Memorial Stadium. It was renamed in 1966 in honor of the late Dr. Rupert H. "Rube" Fike, Class of 1908, a longtime booster and founder of the IPTAY Club, one of the country's first athletic booster clubs. It has been expanded three times, in the 1940s, 1970s, and prior to 2003, when it was renamed Fike Recreation Center.

The place has so many activities for students to stay fit and healthy. Right from fitness gym to swimming pools and group sports facilities, it has everything. I would surely recommend visiting the place if you are a Clemson University student. I loved the badminton court a lot.
First time there. Was as packed as expected but it's definitely one of the nicest Gyms I've been too. They could definitely use a couple decline bench presses though.
The place has good machines to workout and I've noticed that they maintain them during the breaks. But boy is it a small gym. For such a big university this is nowhere sufficient. The gym floor is always packed with people and more than often there are people waiting for machines. Sometimes I've waited for more time than actually spending time doing the workout. The staff are always very friendly, never had a problem with them. The only drawback is that this is a SMALL GYM!, for a college of this size.
For such a big university, such a small gym is not cool. There are not enough machines, dumbbells, barbells and there are long waiting que for most of things. The policy at fike is only to support basketball. If you want to get the court for volleyball during the semester, the priority is always for basketball. During the intramurals tournaments, the specified slots for volleyball also used for students who wanted to play basketball for fun. They close Fike frequently for different events which is a negative point. The functional training room is cool, I liked it. Employees are polite and supportive but totally there is a long way to become a good gym for students.
The rock wall here is really cool, and there's a really relaxed vibe all throughout the gym. My wife and I have felt very at ease despite our inexperience in a gym setting!
I am shocked this place gets so many good reviews. It’s ungodly hot at all times and lacks sufficient fans & ventilation. It’s also disgusting and smells terrible. There are giant dust bunnies on everything. There is literally ONE SINGLE spin bike. Nothing has changed about Fike since I was a student in the early 2000s. I’m an employee of CU now and I am appalled that THIS is what you have to offer your employees as a gym space. It’s just really, really sad and unfortunate that Clemson can’t do any better than this with all the money they rake in between tuition and sports. Apparently there is a nice fancy new gym now with clean, expensive equipment and lots of spin bikes!!! but, oh wait, you don’t allow your employees to use that facility. Students only. Smh
The staff does not know how to update hours of operation. Lockers cannot be used due to special events. The gym is not recommended for student and staff who are coming out of town since you don't know what is open and what is not ahead of time.
I like the equipment but prepare to wait for anything while a 130lb freshman male sits on their phone or strike up a conversation and then does about 8 reps of weight my younger sister could do double of. Or all of the benches being used but everyone has on, at max, 135lbs. Pick your timing right or you're gonna be there a lot longer.
Stands are small if you have a large competition. Was not allowed to stand in the hallway. Pool is very nice and technologically savvy.
Update: After going to this gym for two years it's not improving, just getting worse. It's a shame. Everything is too small and too busy. Compared to other universities this gym is just not up to par and is showing it's age. There are constant construction projects inside but not to improve the elements that most need it, but to add new areas for paid classes. It feels like any progress are for money grabs. Previous: It's bit too small for everyone who wants to use it. The weights are always a mess, and there are never any staff, like at other university gyms, that are ready to spot. There isn't a decent area for deadlifts and there is too few squat racks. Same goes for benches. It's hot all year and the layout wastes space that could be better used for more training area. However it's clean, the people are respectful and nice, and there are towels available for wiping equipment or sweat. The locker rooms are a bit of a shame and are outdated. Over all its decent for the low cost of a university gym.
