The Finnish Heritage Society Sovittaja (FHSS) is a non-profit, social, cultural and charitable organization devoted to promoting scholarship and Finnish heritage and culture. Sovittaja Park is in Rutland, MA.
FHSS is a social, cultural and charitable organization intrested in promoting scholarship and a better appreciation of Finnish Heritage. Our membership consists largely of people of Finnish and Scandinavian descent and of others who share an interest in the activities of the society. Our activities include summertime dinner dances, dances, barbeques, guest speakers, folk dance groups potluck meals, and other events that promote Finnish heritage in a social setting.
The Finnish Heritage Society, Sovittaja (FHSS) is the continuation name of the Finnish Temperance Society, Sovittaja which was formed in Worcester, MA in 1890 and incorporated as a Massachusetts corporation in 1910. Currently FHSS maintains a seasonal hall built in 1926 at Sovittaja Park on Finn Park Road in Rutland, MA.
Its purpose is Education about and preservation of Finnish Cultural Heritage, and to support Historical and Charitable activities.
Its activities include Scandinavian dinner-dances, support of entertainers visiting from Scandinavia, 33 years of Scholarship awards at annual Chicken Barbeques, a Finnish Memorial Service and other events.
This group has 100+ members, with officers elected annually, and directors serving 3 year terms. All positions are filled with unpaid volunteer members.
