FPCS offers an excellent, Christ-centered education to children ages 16 months to grade 5 that cultivates wisdom, grows knowledge, and develops leaders.
First Presbyterian Church was founded in 1873 and is a multi-generational evangelical church that seeks to introduce people to the good news of a restored relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Located in the historic Stadium District of Tacoma, Washington, the church is part of a vital and growing urban neighborhood. One of the church’s ministries is First Presbyterian Church School.
In 1969 Velma Stoermer and Carolyn Havel received permission from the head pastor of First Presbyterian Church, to begin a Christian preschool in the classrooms of our Christian education wing of First Presbyterian Church. The first class had six children. The school grew slowly adding children and staff through the years. The school’s focus has always been combining a top-quality early childhood education for students with a loving atmosphere for all members of the students’ families. This took place early on with monthly get-togethers for mothers and parents covering topics of interest to all. Friendships were developed among the families as they attended Father’s Feasts, Mother’s Teas and other all-family fun activities.
Now, we are preschool through 5th grade. More than twenty-five years ago, kindergarten classes were added and have prepared children to be excellent readers. In 2001 FPCS began a Classical Christian Elementary School kindergarten through fifth grade. The school has sought to continue to provide excellent Christ-centered education that values each child’s gifts, encouraging him or her to grow intellectually, spiritually, and socially in preparation for a life-long walk with Christ. This has been possible for over 40 years because of the superb teachers who have loved and taught each student with commitment and creativity. FPCS is poised to continue educational excellence for generations to come.
Our Mission is to provide an excellent Christ-centered education valuing each child's gifts, encouraging him or her to grow intellectually, spiritually, emotionally and socially in preparation of a life-long walk with Christ.
