Educating all disciplines of first responders on how to properly interact, respond, and address all matters relative to individuals with disabilities.
The mission of the First Responder Disability Awareness Training (FR-DAT) project is to develop a training curriculum for law enforcement, firefighters, emergency medical services (EMS) and 911 operators/dispatchers that provides all first responders with the knowledge necessary to best serve and respond to individuals with disabilities. The content of the training curriculum will be specific to First Responder needs when interacting and responding to incidents, situations, and accidents that involve individuals with disabilities. The end product is in a Train-the-Trainer format that includes PowerPoint slides, CD-ROM, working manual, resource materials, a website, and on-going support from the Niagara University FR-DAT office. This project has been funded with a New York State Developmental Disabilities Planning Council (DDPC) First Responders Disability Awareness Training Grant for the period, September 2010 to August 2013. This grant has been extended through 2015.
