First Ward Park

Description

First Ward Park is a 4.6 acre urban park in the First Ward neighborhood of Uptown Charlotte. After a national competition to attract architects, the firm Shadley Associates was selected to build the park. The park incorporates the existing Dixie's Tavern and UNCC buildings, and new construction will include an office tower, hotel, and parking deck on adjacent land. The park is located at the corner of 7th and Brevard St, adjacent to ImaginOn and the Lynx light rail tracks. Completion of the park occurred on December 8, 2015 with a dedication ceremony followed by tours of the park. This marked the completion of a major park in each of Uptown Charlotte's four wards.PlanningDevelopment of the First Ward Park and surrounding areas had been in planning for several decades by Daniel Levine, owner of Levine Properties, which holds 24 acres of land in First Ward.Under a joint partnership between Levine Properties, UNC Charlotte, Mecklenburg County and the City of Charlotte, Levine will trade the park property with the county for an area of land along Brevard between 8th and 9th streets. The First Ward Park was highlighted in the Charlotte 2020 Vision Plan adopted by the City Council in September 2011. The park is mentioned as the keystone of a "First Ward Village" that would include development of surrounding vacant lots. One of the key accomplishments of such a park would be "creating attractive, active spaces and focal points for each of neighborhoods.Developers and city officials were hoping that the park could serve as a catalyst similar to what happened after the construction of nearby Romare Bearden Park and BB&T Ballpark in the Third Ward of Uptown Charlotte, which spurred development of several apartment and office buildings.

A lovely park for the family to come and enjoy the day. There are water sprouts shooting around where the kids and adults can wet themselves to cool off the warm weather. The park allow people to play around with their family and the exercise area have nice equipment to get your workout on and get in shape. Great place to relax and enjoy with the family
—— READ THIS PARK AREA doesn’t seem like it’s patrolled enough there are bums transients everywhere we counted eight and then we left so we didn’t stay for about 10 minutes…because they were walking around talking to us…talking to each other…talking to themselves… including washing their hair in the water fountains laying on the benches and under any shade they could find…just needs patrol we did not feel safe at all! Homeless everywhere! Needs government assistance This park could be very nice to have a family experience with modern atmosphere jungle gym waterfall!
Great place with a small walk path, lots of physical fitness equipment. Decent amount of options for kids. Near to train station if you don’t want to roam for parking. Great area for family or regular photoshoot.
Every time we come here is a great family time. Kids run around a lot spend the energy being active. You can also take blankets to have a picnic or just relax. There was one time like today we had great music in the background.
Nothing special. A small park, kids can run around, small walking path around. Not too many options for kids. Unfortunately, there are lots of homeless. Scary feeling! Also, try to avoid using the public restroom located in the park. Don't know the woman's restroom, but the men's restroom is dezastruos! Homeless inside cleaning their clothes at the sink, dirty inside, smells disgusting and empty bottles alcoholic drinks on the floor. An interesting thing is the air quality station with a smart flower solar. Unfortunately, even this station is missing the info display with air quality results information.
The park has an amazing architectural backdrop. There is a " work out" area and restrooms. The best part is the, " splash pad" and my granddaughter loves it. Unfortunately, after 1pm you will certainly notice the uptick in the homeless and drug addicts. For that I can only rate this a 3 star. Perhaps some added security might deter this.I would think there is an expectation of safety for the children and what they are being exposed to in a public park designed with them in mind.
Beautiful & spacious area to relax with family, play games in the field & or sit with a good book. The splash pad is now open & so much fun for the kids, or really whoever likes to enjoy a fun sprinkle on a hot day! The views of the neighboring buildings in the city are nice as well!Playground: YesPublic restrooms: YesPicnic tables: NoBarbecue grills: No
What a great space. Beautiful scenic views of Uptown. Wide enough space for group activities and close to the interstate. Tireless kids would wear themselves out! Bring snacks and have a picnic or catch up on some reading.
Nice little park with plenty of garden area, fitness equipments. There is splash pad for kids to cool in summer. Proximity to metro stations is added bonus.
The park was really relaxing, watching the babies play in the water fountains, people working out on the park equipment. The monuments in the park, like the Smart Flower solar,
