Description

Five Loaves Food Pantry exists to serve the Hungry of the Virginia Peninsula. We accept people from all over the Peninsula and only ask that you be hungry in order to receive food. We have served people from Gloucester to Smithfield, but over 85% of the people we serve come from Newport News. In 2013, of the current 1,000 families we served, 982 qualify for Emergency Food Assistance by the USDA standards.

In 2012, Five Loaves Food Pantry distributed food to over 24,292 individuals for under $13,500. In 2013, we have distributed food to over 35,000 individuals for less than $17,000. We are a sustaining food pantry and as such see many families at least once a week; those with a more desperate need, i.e. homeless, we might see almost daily. Since we relocated to Olivet Christian Church in the Denbigh area of Newport News, we have increased the number of families we serve by 30%.

All of the money received by Five Loaves Food Pantry is used for the purchase of food, gas to receive food or serving supplies for the Hot Meal. This year we had to do some capital purchases in the way of Freezers, Shelving and Wagons for transportation and storage at Olivet Christian Church.

We are open Monday through Friday for Perishable Food Distribution from 11am to 1pm. On Tuesday evening, from 5:30pm to 7pm, we serve a Hot Meal and distribute shelf stable groceries (for three meals) and meat.

In addition to the Virginia Peninsula Food Bank, we receive food from Food Lion, Panera and Long Horn Steakhouse. This month we will begin partnering with WaWa and Pizza Hut for additional food products. In addition to food distribution, we also team up with Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and Public Education and the home schooled for educational and hands on instruction regarding hunger, homelessness and food safety.

We also participate in the SHARE Program to encourage food recipients to do volunteering in their community as well to teach them the benefits of financial and food budgeting.

In 2013, we were recognized by the Peninsula Food Bank of Virginia with the Meal Ministry Award for the best program and also the Director, Br. Tim Luken, received the Unsung Hero Award for the work he has done not only with Five Loaves Food Pantry but also with numerous other pantries on the Peninsula.

This place is awesome! for people that are in need of food. The process to sign up is quick and simple. A few questions about household etc. You're given a number that you use each time you visit. You're allowed to come once a week. You get a variety of items from USDA to produce and vegetables eggs milk canned items, snacks, even beautiful flowers. it's literally like going grocery shopping! The volunteers help you load the boxes in your car. I've been going for 2 months and it really bridges the gap! The great thing is you don't need a referral from another agency. Sometimes the wait is a little long standing in the sun but totally worth the wait. Thank you for being helping hand to this community.
Excellent organization compassionate and they show love to the community in need of food.
Very nice ppl and very gd Christian charity to help those in need.
My experience here was experience fulfilling. As for the rude man up front. I didn't think he was rude at all. Firm and direct , absolutely. this is what we need firm and direct. that way people don't take advantage. my experience here was welcomed with open arms. Thank you for all the help im greatful for all the assistance
The man at the front that ask you for your name is truly rude...and a bit aggressive. I saw they way he spoke to a lady in the line as if he is allowed to do this....Don't think that JUST because folks come for some help, that we all have to be disrespected. The way that lady was treated is exactly why we have community meetings about that kind of verbal abuse. And he is a PASTOR....God I hope he repents EVERY DAY for being disrespectful to people that come here for help.
The best people and place in the 757. They make you feel like family. Bruh Tim always has good advice and resources to help. When you need a helping hand. This ministry is a god sent.
I just love Deacon Tim and his staff and all the volunteer's. Everyone is always smiling and they treat you with kindness. The service is great and they feed you while you wait until they call you to pick out your groceries and the rest is already bagged up and waiting for you. Sometimes the wait outside is long due to the amount of people trying to get in. Today was a great day because I arrived right before they closed the doors at 7:00 pm. If you come after the doors are closed you can't get in. Deacon Tim often tells everyone about the timing, and I think it's fair.....they would like to go home too.
Brother Tim is the best dude in the world. This place is amazing. If it wasn't for them I would not have survived. You have to check it out. You have to give this stuff out. I used to work for sister Mary's back in Anniston Alabama. and everybody comes in and grocery shops for free. There needs to be more like this in the world. We look out for each other! People need to learn the love of God. If you understood that you will never lack you will never wait. They have taken care of me for the last two years
Brother Tim, Ms Bettie and the people who volunteer are awesome. But be warned, the people who are in need, some of them are very petty people. I have never seen so many rude, ungrateful people who feel they are " entitled" and better than others there for the same reason. I probably won't return for a while because of the way they act and treat others. Not all of them are bad, but lately the bad have outweighed the good people. Brother Tim and the other volunteers, now they have rules and expect you to follow them, but not once have they ever made me feel unwelcome or unwanted. They are truly helping as GOD commanded us to do for each other
Great resource for cost supplementing and budgeting, or if your starving. Clean and easy, friendly and inviting. Open 5 days a week.
