About

The Florida Historic Capitol Museum

Description

Tallahassee was chosen as the territorial capital in 1824. The first territorial government met in log cabins. A capitol building was constructed in 1826 but never completely finished. It was torn down in 1839 for the construction of the present structure, which was completed in 1845, just prior to Florida’s entry into the Union as the 27th state. Additions to the Historic Capitol were made several times throughout the years. Architect Frank Millburn, who added the classical style dome, made the first expansion in 1902. The 1923 additions by Henry Klutho included two new wings and a marble interior. Finally large wings for the House and Senate chambers were added to the north and south ends of the building in 1936 and 1947, respectively.

Threatened with demolition in the late 1970s when the new capitol was built, The Historic Capitol was saved through citizens’ action and was restored to its 1902 appearance. Architectural highlights include the elaborate art glass dome, red and white striped awnings, and a representation of the Florida State Seal over the entry columns. The restoration of The Old Capitol (1978—1982) was conducted under the supervision of the Department of General Services in conjunction with the Department of State. This intensive project of historical and archaeological investigation makes Florida’s former capitol one of the most thoroughly documented restoration projects in the nation.

Mission

The Florida Historic Capitol Museum serves to illuminate the past, present, and future connection between the people of Florida and their political institutions through programs of civic education, historic interpretation, and preservation.

Very interesting informative tour. Highly recommended for everyone! I thought I was pretty knowledgeable and still learned a lot of new facts and information! However, children under 7yo probably would get a little bored, unless you get creative to represent information to them in a fun interactive way Entrance is free, but donations recommended $10. I would recommend to look into a parking instructions prior arriving as it could get a little confusing. But we called the museum and a professional Guest Relations Rep provided us with excellent parking instructions. Everyone there was friendly, professional, knowledgeable and courteous. We have had absolutely wonderful experience!
Lots of history, I was there for 2.5 hours and I enjoyed every bit of it. I didn't get to finish touring the museum and will plan to be back. The old senate and house buildings are like walking back in time!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$11–15

Had a great time here with my group. We learned all about my the history of the Florida capital. There was lots of interesting things to read and interesting photos to view. You really felt close to the history. It's good to come here with your kids because they will benefit from learning the history. The staff was also very friendly!
Enjoyed the visit. Staff at the desk were great. Exhibits were very interesting. Only comments/concerns. First is that you don't see a sign for handicap entrance until you get to the top of the steps. Hello?!?! It's a little late after your 76 year old wife who had polio struggles to climb the steps with my help. Governor, you and the rest of the politicians don't have a clue!!!! Put information and directions for the handicapped and please make it easy to access. Second. I'm embarrassed to see such a small display for the Seminole Indians. We fought them for 40 years in order to take their land! Even so, they allowed FSU to retain the the Seminole as symbolic for the university. Shame
Lots of information here on Florida's political history. Very well maintained and interesting to tour. Interactive displays and engaging.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree

I was hesitant to bring the kids here, but as soon as we walked in, we were greeted with a smile and a scavenger hunt for the kids to do. They found everything on the list and were given a prize at the end. Highly educational and fun for my 7 year old, and my 10 year old. Not your average museum! We loved it.
