Fontenelle Park

Description

Fontenelle Park is a 108acre public park located at 4575 Ames Avenue, at an intersection of Fontenelle Boulevard in North Omaha, Nebraska. In the late 1940s, the park made headlines across the Midwestern United States as the possible home of a minor league baseball team.HistoryLand for the park was acquired in 1893 in accordance with a grand parks and boulevards schema for Omaha planned by Horace Cleveland in 1891. The Fontenelle Boulevard was also part of this plan. Despite the support of prominent Omahans like Harold Gifford Sr., there were immediate protests from city residents who felt the park land was located too far from the city. Due to lack of funds and criticism, it remained essentially prairie grass for another decade until city growth expanding northwest from Downtown Omaha created demand for improvement. In 1911 the park was graded, loads were built and the golf course was laid out. By 1916 it was one of the most popular and best-patronized-parks in the city.Omaha hosted the American Legion World Series in 1939 at Fontenelle Park, where local favorites Creighton Prep won the championship over a team from Berwyn, Illinois. In 1947 John Rosenblatt explored the park as the possible location for the city's new Triple-A minor league baseball team. However, neighborhood opposition forced the city to look elsewhere, and the stadium ended up in Deer Park, where it eventually hosted the Omaha Royals and was named Rosenblatt Stadium in honor of its advocate.

I spent lots of time there with my dad when I was a kid, back when it was a golf course. I hadn't visited the pond and playground area until last night with my kids. We had an ice cream treat and some stale cereal to feed the fish. I was amazed at the amount of litter in the water! The poor animals! I would imagine a lot them die because the water isn't taken care of. Not to mention the lawn. The weeds in that spot were just terrible. They were huge and there were so many! It looks like the city of Omaha isn't even trying to take care of Fontenelle Park. Mt husband and I were born and raised in North O, and are proud of it. So much so that we chose to raise our kids there as well. Were closer to Miller Park and frequent it. We enjoy Benson Park too. Both of those parks are so much more kept up. We thought we'd give Fontenelle a try since it'd been so long. But we were sorely disappointed. Such a great opportunity to have a beautiful Park. Even the baseball field across the street is better taken care of. I hope Omaha gets it together and provides the people of North O with a Park they can enjoy.
Boys play baseball here. I also love to walk around the newly expanded pond. Nice paths and not too busy. Just wish people would take care of the park better. Parking lot can be messy with broken glass.

Beautiful place for children to play and bbq's
Great spot for local events.
Since the renovation, this park looks so nice! There's rarely anyone there and plenty of room for you or your pups to run around. There's a nice trail that runs around the lake if you want to keep it on pavement. Don't let the area scare you off!
I hadn't been here since they had redone the area. I had a very pleasant walk around the water area. I feels a little bit longer than it was, but I could be mistaken. The playground and tennis courts are still kept up so that is good. I look forward to walking here again, and encourage anyone in the area to enjoy this newly renovated area. But please don't feed the poor geese bread! It's not good for them. I know it's fun to feed them, especially if you have kids so I can give you some things that are healthy for them: Grains, grapes cut in half, birdseed, frozen peas and corn defrosted, lettuce or other greens, vegetable trimmings or peels, duck feed pellets or other starter pellets. Let's keep the geese happy and healthy while we have fun feeding them! I hope you enjoy the area as I did!
The people that work here are the absolute kindest souls and it is such a good place for kids to go and be outdoors! They have really fun activities weekly and it is such a decent priced membership. Between here and the zoo, by far the best places to get an annual membership.
Love it so much! Beautiful nature with alot of wildlife around that call this place home. Currently it is under construction, but is open to public again finally! The pond is bigger & better than ever! There is a playground and a spray ground for kids. There are a few grills around pond and few picnic tables. Fish are soon to be stocked in pond again.
Fontenelle Park has lots of different options for your family's needs. It has a really cute splash pad and small playground area. I wish it didn't have sand but overall seems clean and doesn't have a lot of clutter. There's also a nice walking trail around the pond with gazebos to grill and have a party. There's plenty of seating throughout the park with places to fish. It would be great to get professional pictures taken. I think it's a great gem in the middle of North Omaha. If you're looking for a quiet parkwe've only gone in the evening so far, this is a great place to go.
