Fighting Scots - fighting hunger! The Maryville College chapter of the FRN is dedicated to reducing waste and feeding people in Blount County.
Food Recovery is a national Nonprofit that aims to reduce food waste on college campuses by getting young people involved in the process of donating dining hall food to those in need. Because of this food recovery aims to fight food deserts by giving those who do not have access to healthy food themselves. Maryville College aims to reduce food waste while giving back to to the community by donating all leftover, usable food to local nonprofits.
The Maryville College chapter of the Food Recovery Network was founded in the summer of 2015 by Brandon Denny upon returning from the national Bonner Foundation conference where a fellow Bonner shared his own experiences founding a chapter at their college. This, along with a personal connection to hunger in America, inspired Brandon to start his own chapter at Maryville.
Since then the chapter has recovered over ten thousand pounds of usable food for local nonprofits to distribute to clients in need and has held multiple outreach events on campus to raise awareness of food waste and hunger in America!
