I highly recommend Foos-Garvin and Shelby in particular. She was extremely thorough and took the time to really talk through and explain things to me without making me feel bad for not knowing. I had some complicated issues due to mistakes made by a former employer and I'm confident everything was managed correctly.
I have been disappointed. As a new S Corp owner a year ago, I trusted Foos-Garvin to help me understand tax needs and do my taxes right. Here were the issues: - They were unable to explain basis to me. I typically learn things easily and I understand basis now but at the time, nothing Jared said made sense. - I kept asking WHY my basis was so different from the cash I had, and they were unable to answer this very basic question. As it turns out, if they had simply considered that maybe I had a valid question instead of just saying "it's complicated," they would have discovered an error they had made. - This year, I went a different route due to the fact that they were unable/unwilling to answer my tax questions clearly. In the process of doing my 2022 taxes, we discovered that Foos-Garvin had NOT started my basis calculations correctly, with the capital investment I had started the business with. **They had left it out completely.** This is the reason why my basis was so different from my cash available. And yet, despite my very valid question of why the difference, they never: 1 took a second look at that time, 2 thought to double-check and make sure that the amount that I had designated in Quickbooks as "Owner Investment" was included in basis, 3 or asked me if I had started the business with an investment. All basis calculations start with this line 2 of the 7203 and 1120s, so this seems a pretty big thing for them to have forgotten. They included only the office assets I had given to the business and left out the cash I had invested as owner capital. - When I called them this week to ask about the basis numbers, the office manager who returned my call spoke with a very rude tone of voice. I stayed polite and indicated that I was only asking where they had obtained the totals in two fields. I said that I was probably just forgetting something, so I was not even blaming anything on them. But she acted as if I was accusing them of willfully falsifying my return. However, she confirmed their mistake in her answer, though she tried to blame it on me. I believe it was just an oversight... as a new S Corp owner, I did not know what to make sure they saw, and they forgot to ask me about my starting owner investment. But this is how those sort of mistakes happen. Thus, I will never go back. Not including my starting owner capital investment in the basis calculation was a simple oversight and maybe I could have looked past it. But the rudeness over the phone and their unwillingness/inability to answer my question a year ago which would have helped them find the problem are enough that I cannot recommend them. When a tax company is not willing/able to help a business owner understand taxes so they can be sure to provide the right information to the tax preparer, then there is no way to be confident that the resulting return is actually accurate.
