Nice hike with views of St. John's Bridge. There's a lot of great spots on this trail. The trail itself is fairly low traffic, shaded and a good moderate option offering some inclines to male it feel like more of a workout. Lovely hike overall.
Beautiful hike! We went mid October just the drive on Skyline to get up there was incredible with all the changing leaves! The hike really paid off with some great views of St. Johns Bridge! The hike back up to the trailhead was almost all uphill so be aware of that. Beautiful all around and I would 100% recommend!
Great place with nice view of Portland bridge. You’ll be mostly in shades. There are variety of hiking trails around the area. They range from 2 to 6 miles.
Great view of St. John’s bridge We came here and there was a ton of graffiti near the entrance plus a homeless campsite literally a foot from the trail. Hiked for about 4 minutes and my wife had a really bad feeling in her gut, so we turned back. When we started our car, it tumbled really loud, so I checked and in that short time frame our catalytic converter had been cut out. In broad daylight at like 4pm. We looked around and saw tons of little broken glass in at least 10 different spots that we overlooked when we parked probably from smashed car windows. Luckily our windows were fine. I’m sure it used to be safer, and I’m sure the rest of the hike is beautiful, but Portland isn’t what it used to be.
bit sketchy in the snow/rain because some of the paths are very narrow, sloped, and muddy, but beautiful views and an enjoyable hike.
There is a view overlooking St.John. The road is also moderately sloped, so it is good for hiking. It's a bit disappointing that the parking lot is small.
Very muddy in parts but I was still able to run it...which was not an easy feat with 1400 feet elevation gain. I’d like to do it again when the trail is in a better condition so I think that makes this a good review. Also, note that during the view of the bridge from Forest Park is clear no matter what season it is.
Pros: -Great views At least two! -Mildly interesting layout Cons: -Horrible parking -Many homeless, camps, trash, and on the trail drunk and stumbling. -After parking you must walk along the side of the road with no sidewalks. - Muddy when wet -Lots of roots and dips Overall: Come here to snag a picture or two for the collection, but bring friends and protection! Not for the wildlife, but from the people.
Nice long hike close to St. Johns. There are several forks, so download the map if it's your first time so you don't have to guess at navigation. We parked at the tiny parking area south of the stairs. The first part of the trail to the 1st fork was sad with thickly grown almost overgrown invasive Himalayan blackberries and ivy. There was a lot of noise from the road & bridge. After hiking past Northwest Leif Erikson Drive utility/fire road, the remainder of the trail was lovely with an awesome array of native plants, trees, and birds. We especially enjoyed seeing huge native elderberry bushes, native Oregon blackberry which I saw here for my 1st time ever!, and nice a variety of ferns. We even found some huckleberries to eat. Trail was nice & dry, and it's fun to log some extra miles where the trail is easy & mostly flat. There is another way to access the loop by heading west on the bridge, turning north on NW Bridge Ave, and picking taking the small trail on the left just before the road goes over a small gully. If you're crossing the bridge, I recommend this route so you can see a different part of the trail that is less traveled because there is no parking nearby. The trail was moderately busy: we saw approximately 4 dozen people, but it was spread out for the most part. We'll definitely do this one again.
Not ideal for dogs! Beautiful trail, but it is skinny and steep and slopes a good bit towards the edge. My dog and I struggled a bit! It would have gotten 5 stars if I wasn't with her.
