Fort Southwest Point

Description

Fort Southwest Point was a federal frontier outpost at what is now Kingston, Tennessee, in the southeastern United States. Constructed in 1797 and garrisoned by federal soldiers until 1811, the fort served as a major point of interaction between the Cherokee and the United States government as well as a way station for early migrants travelling between Knoxville and Nashville.Although there are no records and few contemporary descriptions pertaining to the fort's design and structure, archaeological excavations conducted in the 1970s and 1980s have determined the fort's layout. Based on these findings, the City of Kingston and the Tennessee Division of Archaeology have reconstructed part of the fort. The site is managed by the City of Kingston.Geographical settingThe Fort Southwest Point site is situated on a hill overlooking the confluence of the Tennessee River and the Clinch River. This confluence is now part of the Watts Bar Lake impoundment of the Tennessee River, created by the completion of Watts Bar Dam in 1942. The Emory River empties into the Clinch approximately 5mi upstream from Southwest Point. The Fort Southwest Point site is part of Southwest Point Park, which serves as both a historical and recreational area. The park is located along State Route 58 approximately 2mi south of Interstate 40 and 1mi south of U.S. Route 70.

It is a little jewel in Roan County. Beautiful location and meticulously maintained. Visiting the museum is a must, but be prepared to spend an hour or so. Jack is very welcoming and full of knowledge on the site and history and general. He will keep you enthralled as long as you will let him. My wife and I will be looking forward to returning for upcoming events at the Fort.
If you're going through Kingston stop here! it's very cool shows you how things were back in the day. Dude in the main building knows a whole lot about it if you wanna know all the facts about it.
To describe this place is a one word adjective, amazing! What an incredible asset to the history of middle Tennessee. And from talking to the curator very, few people know about it. To have such a place, and a curator that cares so much for the history and importance of it, truly should be both treasured, and screamed from the mountain tops that surround it. My husband, and family will be coming back as soon as it is at all possible. To everyone in Tennessee from a Michigander that doesn't have a place like this take your families, and tell your friends to take theirs, because it's only going to get better in the coming years.
Fort Southwest Point is a fantastic area. There are a number of recreated buildings that you can walk through, and a load of plaques that give information on what you're looking at. The showstopper is really the place where multiple rivers come together, the views are just fantastic. There are plenty of walking paths, fitness stops, and a nice amphitheatre as well. Such a great place to walk around!
One of my favorite disc golf courses! Cool views. Fun elevation changes. Good mix of big drives and short technicals. Generally clean and well-kept and well-marked. Enjoyable for any skill level!
This place is full of history and has great disc golf and space for ball sports. Something about it has a “welcome home” feeling, which may be due to the consistently manicured look that comes from the hard work of the staff. Lovely place. I’m truly thankful that it’s close to us.
The man in the office is super friendly and knowledgeable!!! Please visit this place and donate if you can
Beautiful historic park to come and jog. Southwest point is one where George Washington once stood. Beautiful cabins and church favorite park in Tennessee.
Originally built in 1797 archeology excavations conducted in 1970's and 1980's. Creates this replica of the Fort Southwest Point, located just outside Kingston, Tennessee. Overlooking the Tennessee and Clinch River. The Fort was created has secured area for travelers from Indian attacks has they traveled to Middle Tennessee. The pictures show what is to believed the Fort looked like. A lot of historical value plus the view is amazing. Lots of walking trails and scenic views. The visitors center is open Monday through Friday. Access to Fort is 7 days a week park hours.
While we got there just after they closed, and were unable to view the Knowledge Center with the artifacts, it was still awesome to walk up to the fort and view the buildings and read the placards about each thing on the site. My daughter enjoyed running around and seeing everything, and we read the signs together - fun, quick, little outing with some local Tennessee history. My husband loves the disc golf course here as well, 18 holes both in and out of the trees, marked well and maintained perfectly. We will definitely be coming back when they're open to see the inside of the buildings!
