Ferry ride out was pleasant and the rangers really know the history of the area. I felt enjoyed the oration as opposed to a canned recording. The Fort is really cool to walk around. The large guns still in place and the views of the bay are awesome. We really enjoyed the flag ceremony where the kids got to volunteer to help!
A must see if you like history. I booked online for the next day, adults $32.00, military and seniors $29.00, child $19.00. It was well worth the price. They also offer other tour packages if your interested. I took the first tour from Liberty Square at 9:30am - 11:45am. It’s a 30 minute ferry ride each way. Observed the raising of the flag. The National Park staff were knowledgeable and professional. I would recommend if you’re in the area.
Beautiful day to visit! Appreciate the nice boat ride of the harbor. The rangers were kind and gave a great overview of the history of Fort Sumter at the beginning. Hard to imagine how tall it was way back when. I personally thought it was just enough time out there. National Monument checked off our list.
Nice boat ride, good info. Clean bathrooms. Only an hour on island so use it wisely. If you go on the first tour, walk around during the flag ceremony if not, you will run out of time.
Very informative information provided both on the way out and at the Fort. We got to participate in the lowering of the flag - so fun. The return trip included a buffet that was so yummy and a trip around the harbor including go under the bridge with the sun setting. Loved it and well worth the cost! Highly recommend
We enjoyed the boat ride and view of Charleston from the harbor. The dolphins swimming along the side was an added bonus. The two hour trip includes 30 minutes on the boat each way and one hour at the fort. The tour company did great, we were ontime and everything went well. I was a bit disappointed in the fort itself. I guess I thought there would be more opportunities to interact with history there. I appreciate the fort for the story that unfolds, but if you are looking for a fort that is more intact and has more historical displays, go south 2 hours to Ft. Pulaski.
These Rangers are awesome. They definitely love doing this and it shows. They are very friendly and love to answer any and all questions about the Fort. They made the experience great. Look out for dolphins. They like to show up from time to time.
Very cool tour, the boat ride over is very pleasant and chill. Nice staff, pro tip, the gift shop at the ticket purchase site is bigger than the one at the fort. Great historic site! I highly recommend this spot
While taking a mini vacation down to James Island for the labor day weekend, I made a last minute change of plans to take my family to learn about Ft Sumter. My kids loved the information, taking the tour, the ferry ride as well as perusing the exhibit. They even became junior rangers. The smiles on their faces made the entire trip worthwhile. Anyone visiting Charleston should take the tour at least once.
