The mission of the Fort Tryon Park Trust is to promote the restoration, preservation, and enhancement of this historic and scenic landmark for the benefit and use of the surrounding community and all New Yorkers. The Trust partners with New York City Parks & Recreation to secure dedicated funding for park restoration efforts, ongoing horticultural maintenance, and free public programming.
The Fort Tryon Park Trust has a goal of raising a $15 million endowment for sustaining the park and has already raised close to $3 million. Several signifcant projects are currently underway:
The Trust has engaged Lynden Miller, the Public Garden Designer, to develop a Framework Plan for enhancing and sustaining the Heather Garden for the long term. Miller is known for her public garden work in Bryant Park, Central Park’s Conservatory Garden, Madison Square Park, the Perennial Garden at the New York Botanical Garden and Columbia University. Miller is identifying ways to build upon the unique horticultural and historic assets of the Heather Garden and to ensure that they remain featured in the garden throughout its lifetime.
A generous gift from the Peter Jay Sharp Foundation is initiating the restoration of the three-acre "Alpine Garden," with its carved stone staircases, rock garden plantings, and grotto water feature. A one-mile Winter Walk of conifers and evergreen plantings is being planned, thanks to the generosity of The Arthur Ross Foundation. Historic water service is being reinstated throughout the Broadway expanse of the park thanks to the Cleveland H. Dodge Foundation.
Fort Tryon Park is also home to the Cloisters Museum, a branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which features one of the finest collections of Medieval Art.
