100 Years Ago … My Great Grandfather, Knut Berglund came to America from Orsa, Sweden on a sailing ship as a merchant marine. He longed to return and make a good life for himself and his family which he did on the ship, Bergensford. He settled, along with hundreds of other Swedes, in Rockford, Illinois a town of trees: walnut, cherry, ash and maple, and a railroad which ran from the East to the West Coast. It made perfect sense that Rockford would become a hub of fine furniture creation spanning from the 1870’s throughout the 1960’s. It was a mecca for the creative. Furniture manufacturers were the impetus for many artisans, designers, architects, stained glass artists, blacksmiths, hardware finishers and fabric manufacturers. Buyers came from near and far, Chicago, Boston to Los Angeles to place their orders to ship throughout the country. Most of the furniture created here was influenced by 18th Century English and French design. However, these craftsmen were adventurous and innovative and fashioned many one of a kind pieces such as a Mexican Modern dining set and the rare bleach walnut finish, quite different from the popular dark finishes.
I recently discovered how my Great Grandfather Knut lived. His love of this furniture has been passed down through all these generations and I’m astounded by it! His pride and all that of the hundreds of men who made extraordinary, quality cabinetry that still withstands today, the hands of time.
